Lady Bulldogs struggle to find points in recent loss

In trying to find a team identity, the Yoakum Lady Bulldogs also discovered they need to find ways to put points on the board.

Yoakum made just nine field goals and scored just 25 points in a 43-25 loss to rival Hallettsville Jan. 2 at Bulldog Gymnasium.

“We have to figure out what our identity is. We have to figure out what we do well and what our weaknesses are,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Ashton Phillips said. “The biggest thing to find out what we can do to score. We play hard defense and we are scrappy, and we rebound but then we turn the ball over or miss a shot. It is great if you can hold people to around 40 points but if you can’t score, it does not really matter.”

Destiny Rios was Yoakum’s top scorer with 10 points and Olivia Fojt added seven points.

Hallettsville had two players with doublefigure scoring as Macy Herring led all scorers with 11 points and Adalyn Pohl contributed 10 points.

Scoring was rather sparse in the first four minutes of the game with a Herring bucket the only points, putting Hallettsville ahead 2-0. Alaina Halata hit a three and Pohl made two free throws to put the Lady Brahmas on top 7-0.

Fojt assisted on a Rios bucket to get two points on the board for the Lady ‘Dogs; Hallettsville ended the frame on a 7-0 run.

In the second period, the Lady Brahmas converted a couple of early steals into baskets and outscored Yoakum 11-6 overall with Rios sinking four points and Fojt connecting on a jumper.

In the third stanza, Hallettsville got ahead 29-10 as Yoakum fought with two buckets by Rios and Fojt rebounded a missed shot as the third frame ended 35- 17 in favor of the Lady Brahmas.

Addison Matula hit a layup and Kasey Harper was good behind the arc during a 6-1 Hallettsville run to pull farther ahead.

Yoakum ended the game with seven of nine points with Madison Gonzales hitting an inside bucket and later converting a triple.
