Lady Comanches oust Falls City in first-round game
MARION — Being able to adjust to a style different than one is used to will be one of the keys to advancing in the playoffs for the Shiner softball team.
The Lady Comanches got the job done in their playoff opener April 27 in Marion against Falls City in a 10-3 win.
Shiner only had a couple of hits throughout the first two innings but was able to get more to finish with around eight.
Shiner faced some solid pitching in district games but faced a different style against Falls City and will have to adjust quicker as they will likely face more of the same pitching they faced against the Beaverettes further down the playoff road.
“We have worked hard on adjusting (to pitching) and hitting all year. One of our go-to’s is being able to adjust on the fly to different pitching,” Lady Comanches head coach Jason Keller said. “That will make us more successful as we get into the third and fourth rounds.”
With no seniors on the roster, getting past the first hurdle provides valuable experience to the Lady Comanches.
“Always good to get a playoff win and move on to the next round especially with a group of young and inexperienced players, with the pressure and adversity, and how they are going to respond,” Keller said. “It’s great for everyone when you can move on to the next round even though you did not have your best game. We have to eliminate mistakes as every round gets tougher.”
He said he liked how Shiner ran the bases.
“We ran the bases well, taking advantage of extra-base hits and passed balls which gave us the chance to score runs,” Keller said.
Falls City R. Johnson put the ball into play to start the game and reached first on an error and went for second but was thrown out on a relay from first baseman Dyllan Chrismon to second baseman Brinley Ramirez; Shiner pitcher Paeden Vincik struck out the next two batters to end the top of the first. Ramirez got a leadoff walk, stole second, got to third on the sacrifice by Teresa Olivas and later advanced home on a steal for a 1-0 lead.
The Beaverretes were able to use two hits and a walk to load the bases with two outs in the second before Vincik got out of the jam with another strikeout.
The Lady Comanches got four runs in the bottom of the inning: Alaya Boedeker drew a one-out walk, moved to second on Haley Patek’s sacrifice. Ramirez was walked, stole second and went to third on a passed ball while Alaya Boedeker scored on that passed ball. Olivas singled in Ramirez. Vincik was walked and Rylee Vancura doubled in Olivas and Vincik’s runner Aimee Mitchon for a 5-0 lead.
Shiner took a 6-0 lead in the third as Callie Sevcik tripled and scored on a sacrifice groundout by Riley Rainosek.
Shiner had another big inning in the fourth with Ramirez and Olivas starting things off with singles. Vancura picked up an intentional walk; Kailey Boedeker drove in Ramirez with a hit; Falls City fielded a ball by Sevcik and was able to tag out Olivas at home on a fielder’s choice and Vancura later advanced home on a passed ball; Rainosek was walked to load the bases; Alaya Boedeker walked to score Kailey Boedeker and Sevcik scored on a Patek hit.
Falls City ended the shutout in the fifth with a couple of walks, a single that scored two runs and the batter went home on a three-base error to get within 10-3 before Shiner held them off in the sixth and seventh frames.
