The regular seasons wraps up for local teams this week. The Cardinals host Central Texas Temple Christian while the Comanches travel to Yorktown.
Central Texas Christian at St. Paul
The St. Paul Cardinals host Central Texas Christian, and while the Cardinals are in the playoffs, a win can improve their seeding.
“If we lose to Central Texas Christian, we will finish in fourth place. If we win and, depending on points, we could finish either second or third. If we finish higher than fourth, we will get a bye for the first round,” St. Paul head coach Barry Wolf said.
The Lions are 8-1 (3-1), score 33.1 points a game and have yielded just 10.5 points a game.
Central Texas Christian is balanced on offense with 158.4 yards passing a game and 152.3 yards rushing a game.
Cooper Smith has completed 66-of-105 passes for 881 yards, seven touchdowns and four interceptions.
Austin Evans is the leading rusher with 678 yards on 95 carries, 7.1 average and 12 touchdowns.
Chief catching threat is Ike Klimchuk with 402 yards and five touchdowns.
“Evans is a solid running back and runs the ball out of the wildcat. He did get injured in their previous game and we are not sure if he will play on Friday or not so we have to prepare as if he will play,” Wolf said. “If he does not play, then quarterback Cooper Smith is a good passer.”
On the defensive side, Klimchuk had 47 total tackles, eight solo and 39 assists.
“On defense, they are multiple; it just depends on what the offense is lining up in,” Wolf said. “Our offense will need to be ready to face multiple defensive sets.”
Shiner at Yorktown
Comanches are at Yorktown for a chance to take the district title.
The Wildcats (7-2, 3-1) are scoring 40.1 points. a game while yielding 20.2 points a game.
“Yorktown is good on both sides of the football,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
On offense, Yorktown is averaging 362 yards a game and are another team that will run the ball a lot with 79.6 percent of their offensive plays being running plays.
The ‘Cats get about 299.4 yards a game on the ground and 63.2 yards a game through the air.
Quarterback Brody Metting is over 1,000 rushing yards with 1,302 on 151 carries, 144.7 a game, 8.6 average and 21 touchdowns. Mckenzie Yanta has 106 rushes for 767 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Metting has completed 50-of-90 passes for 569 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. His top target is Matthew Olguin who has 270 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
“Brody Metting is their main guy on offense and McKenzie Yanta will get some carries as well,” Boedeker said. “Metting’s go-to receivers are Matthew Olguin and Cameron Willis. They will run zone read and trap plays. Our defense will need to prepare well for Metting and play good technique to stop the running backs.”
On defense, Adam Serbin has 63 total tackles, 34 assists, 29 solos and 10.5 tackles for loss.
Richard Flores has 38 solo tackles, 19 assists, 57 total tackles and 20.5 tacles for loss.
Rylan Rau had three sacks. Olguin had three interceptions and three fumble recoveries.
“They base out of 4-3 and will mix it up. The linebackers will blitz and they have some size on the line,” Boedeker said. “Our offensive line will need to communicate well and we will need to put together some drives.”
