Local high school football: Shiner hosts Louise, Cards at TRC

Shiner hosts the Louise Hornets while the Cardinals make yet another trip to the Houston area in their district game against Tomball Rosehill Christian in an attempt to stop a two-game district skid.
Louise at Shiner
The Comanches host Louise in the final regular-season home game.
The Hornets are 3-5 and 1-1 in district.  They are scoring 14.5 points a game and yielding  28.1 points a game.
The Hornets lean towards the run with nearly 70 percent of their offensive yardage this season coming on the ground although they have adjusted their offense throughout the season.
“Louise has changed a lot on offense and our defense is preparing to deal with a lot,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
Louise’s top rusher is Lake Wadsworth who has 611 yards on 97 carries, 6.3 yards a carry and five touchdowns.
“He is their best player and he will carry the football a lot,” Boedeker said. “Our defense will need to key on him.”
Quarterback Conner Gonzalez is 41-of-102 for 519 yards, six touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Leading receiver is Weston Howard with 253 yards and three touchdowns on 13 catches.
Boedeker said the Hornets have lined up in everything this season from the shotgun to the I-formation.
On the defensive side, Louise runs a split and Wadsworth leads the defense from his linebacker spot with 94 tackles, 64 solo tackles, 30 assists, 4.0 tackles for loss and three fumble recoveries.
Fellow linebacker Tanner Lott will also make plays.
“Their defensive line is big and our offensive line will need to get low and have a good push. We also have stressed ball security as we have been for a lot of the season,” Boedeker said.
This is the third Lavaca County school Louise would have faced after playing Hallettsville Sacred Heart and Shiner St. Paul earlier in the season.
St. Paul at Tomball Rosehill Christian
The Eagles currently sit at 3-5 (0-3) and are scoring just 15.5 points a game while yielding 26.25 points per game.
“They are struggling in district but move the ball well,” Cardinals head coach Barry Wolf said. “Defense is their main problem.”
Rosehill Christian runs a spread offense, mainly out of the pistol formation.
Wolf said they will run the ball 60 percent of the time.
“They have a good running back that they run iso (isolation) plays with a lead blocker,” he said. “They can throw the ball and have one main receiver they target.”
St. Paul’s defense will need to concentrate on stopping the run and then focusing on the Eagles’ key receiver.”
Rosehill runs a 4-3 on the defensive side.
“They are not as big or athletic as Brazos Christian. We will need to block well,” Wolf said. “We need to stay with our game plan. We did well throwing the ball last week but need to mix it up more against Rosehill Christian.”
