Minor League girls advance to semifinals
The Hallettsville Red advanced to the semifinals of the District 31 East Zone Minor League Tournament with a 10-5 victory here Monday night.
Hallettsville will meet Cuero Wednesday at 8 p.m. with the winner going to the finals.
Neely Grahmann was the winning pitcher in relief, working 3.1 innings ceding four hits and only one run.
Shiner scored first in the top of the initial inning when Chloe Pohler led off with a base hit and scored on a wild pitch. The locals replied with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Julie Haas and Grahmann walked with Haas scoring on a base hit by Brynadee Etzler. After an out, Maddi Sacco hit a two-run single to center. A four-run second inning made it 7-1.
Braylee Hanslik led off with a single and Molly Rainosek and Aubree Thompson all walked. Hanslik and Rainosek scored on wild pitches. Haas and Sawyer Wimberly both drove in runs with base hits.
Shiner trimmed the lead to 7-4 with a three-run third inning on three walks and base hit by Harper Strzelczyk. Grahmann came in and put the fire out with a strike out.
Hallettsville put across a run in the third frame. Ada Meinkowsky ripped a triple to right centerfield and scored on the play when the throw from the outfield went into the dugout. Sacco led off the fifth inning with a single and scored on an infield out by Finley Poeling for Hallettsville’s final run of the night.
Wimberly made two brilliant plays on ground balls to third base and Hanslik threw out a runner attempting to steal.
H’ville 23, Yoakum 1
Hallettsville routed Yoakum 23-1 in the opening round of the tournament Friday night. Sawyer Wimberly tossed a three-inning no-hitter. The only run scored was on a wild pitch after a walk.
Wimberly walked two and struck out six. Yoakum put just one ball in play.
Hallettsville scored early and often with seven runs in the first inning on only one hit and six bases on balls.
Brynadee Etzler had that hit and drove in a run. Julie Haas, Neely Grahmann, Wimberly, Ada Meinkowsky, Finley Poeling, Braylee Hanslik, Chloe Jansky, Molly Rainosek and Aubree Thompson all walked in the inning.
A 16-run second inning upped the lead to 23-1.
Julie Haas drove in three runs with two singles, the first after Emery Haas walked. Etzler, Wimberly, and Meinkowsky ensued hit run-scoring singles. Maddi Sacco had a big three-run double.
