VICTORIA — The Shiner Comanches outhit Kenedy 21-5 and outscored them 18-3 to sweep the Lions in the regional semifinals Wednesday and Thursday at Victoria’s Riverside Stadium.
Shiner will play either Refugio or Mumford in the regional final next week.
Shiner had some miscues in the series but overall was not too hurt by them, and had solid pitching and hitting.
“It is all about getting better each week and learning from mistakes. We made a few base running mistakes in the first game and we cleaned those up in the second game. Another key is getting a big hit when you need one and we did that,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
Shiner 8, Kenedy 3 (Game 2)
The Lions managed a homer and a double during a three-hit, three-run third inning to rally from 4-0 down to 4-3.
But following the Lions’ best inning at the plate in the series, Kenedy was unable to to tie and take the lead as Shiner worked to hang on for a 8-3 victory to close out the series.
“We came out and hit the ball good. I threw a lot of strikes and the defense made the plays behind me,” junior pitcher Drew Wenske said. “After they got those hits in the third, I just went back up on the mound and played my game.”
Freshman Keenan Hailey had a massive day at the plate as he went 4-for-4 and led the
Comanches in hits. He drove in three runs, scored two runs and had a stolen base.
Wenske got the win with three runs on three hits, a wild pitch, a walk and nine strikeouts.
“We knew it was going to be a battle because Kenedy is a good team,” Boedeker said. “Drew competed well on the mound for us. Kenedy had one big swing of the bat but besides that, Drew pitched a great game and we played great on defense behind him and we got some key hits.”
Shiner opened the game with three runs in the first — Ryan Peterson singled, later moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a Wenske sacrifice before Hailey brought him home on a single. AJ Patek was walked and Bryce Nerada got a hit.
Hailey later scored on a Bryce Filip sacrifice and Patek scored on a Carson Schuette single
In the second frame, Peterson was walked and scored again on Hailey’s hit
In the bottom of the third, LJ Barrientez had a leadoff single for the Lions and later went to second on an error. J. Barrientez got to first on a wild pitch and Kenedy got within 4-3 as K. Miller got the one-out, three-run jack.
Shiner was held in check until the fifth box as Hailey and Patek singled; A Nerada sacrifice got Hailey home and Schuette scored Patek on a single for the second time he brought Patek home.
In the sixth square, Peterson singled with one out; Wenske doubled and Hailey got hit No. 4, which got Peterson home. Nerada picked up another RBI sacrifice, scoring Wenske with a fly out to right field.
Shiner hitting/offense — Keenan Hailey, 4-4, 2 runs, 3 RBI, 1 stolen base; Ryan Peterson, 2-3, 3 runs, 1 stolen base; Carson Schuette, 2-4; Drew Wenske 1-2, 1 run, 1 double; AJ Patek, 1-2, 2 runs, 1 stolen base; Bryce Nerd, 1-2, 1 RBI; Bryce Filip, 1-3,  1 RBI.

Shiner 10, Kenedy 0 (Game 1)
The Comanches got at least two base hits in each inning and shut down Kenedy with two hits in a 10-0 win in five innings on Wednesday.
Peterson got the win as he yielded just a couple of hits and struck out eight batters.
Peterson and catcher Nerada each got two hits as the Comanches finished with nine total.
“We knew the Kenedy pitcher would throw fast balls early in the count and we just had to jump on it,” senior third baseman Filip said.
“It was a good start. Ryan pitched well. We hit the ball well,” Boedeker said.
Peterson had a leadoff double in the bottom of the first inning and moved to third on a Hailey sacrifice.  His runner Caden Chrismon, scored on an RBI single from Patek.
In the second frame, Schuette started things with a double and Jace Moeller picked up a walk. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice groundout by Cale Shows.
Peterson was granted an intentional walk and Wenske scored Schuette and Moeller on a double to right field.
However, the Lions ended the inning on the base paths as a throw from right field to shortstop put Wenske out as he tried to advance further and Chrismon was thrown out trying to return to third.
“It was base running mistakes and being aggressive. We just got into a bind and Kenedy made the plays. We were able to survive it,” Boedeker said. “
A double play by the Lions in the bottom of the third helped keep Shiner from scoring further.
But Shiner then had a heck of a fourth frame with seven runs on three hits. Moeller reached base on a one-out error; Shows was hit by the pitch and Peterson singled to load things up.  Kenedy misfielded Wenske’s batted ball, allowing Moeller and Shows to score. Hailey was hit by the pitch and Patek had a fly out to center to score Peterson. Bryce Nerada singled in Wenske and Filip did likewise for Hailey.
Runner Hunter Knight scored when Moeller was hit by the pitch with bases loaded. Filip scored the final run when he went to home on a passed ball.
Shiner hitting/offense — Nerada, 2-2, 1 RB; Peterson, 2-2; Wenske, 1-3, 1 run, 1 double, 2 RBI; Schuette, 1-2, 1 run, 1 double; Hailey, 1-1, 1 run; Filip, 1-3, 1 run, 1 RBI; Patek, 1-1, 2 RBI; Jace Moeller, 2 runs, 1 RBI; Caden Chrismon, 2 runs; Hunter Knight, 1 run; Cale Shows, 1 run.
