Shiner 1, Thorndale 0
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Shiner catcher Bryce Nerada negated the need for a further inning (or three or four) with a shot past second base that scored Ryan Peterson for the walk-off run in a 1-0 pitcher duel.
“I knew that curveball was coming,” he said. “We just had to sit on the curveballs and attack the fast balls. Thorndale was very solid in the field.”
The bottom of the eighth started with Peterson picking up a leadoff walk and got to second on a sacrifice by Drew Wenske.
“It was huge for us to be able to keep a good-hitting team like Thorndale where they were,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said. “I thought our pitchers did an outstanding job and our defense made the plays when they had to. Finally got that clutch hit we needed.”
Peterson and Wenske combined for a no-hitter with three hits, a pair of walks and 14 total strikeouts.
“We were able to keep them off the board. They are a great hitting team,” Peterson said.
Nerada led the offensive effort with three hits; Keenan Hailey got two hits and AJ Patek got a double for Shiner’s lone extra-base hit.
The ‘Dogs started well with a hit to start the game and took advantage o a Shine error and walk to eventually get a runner to third before Shiner made the final out.
Shiner went through the first three innings with just Patek’s double in the second and he was later caught stealing at third. Shiner got a pair of hits in the fourth and sixth frames and a lone hit in the fifth.
