Shiner baseball: Wenske helps Falcons to regional tournament appearance
Shiner graduate and University of Texas Permian Basin baseball player Drew Wenske saw action in about 21 games in his freshman year (2024) for the Falcons.
Listed as a utility player on the official roster, Wenske mainly pitched for UTPB.
The Falcons advanced into the NCAA South Regional tournament to conclude a historical season.
His first game action came Feb. 2 in the opener against St. Mary’s at home, the first game of a four-game series that weekend. Wenske pitched one inning with one strikeout in an 11-1 Falcons win.
His next action was Feb. 4 at home to St. Mary’s with 1/3 innings pitched, two runs, two earned runs, three walks and 54.00 Earned Run Average as UTPB took a 15-5 win in the fourth game of the series and the second game of a doubleheader that day.
Wenske’s next game was Feb. 9 at Lubbock Christian where he worked 2 1/3 innings, two hits, one run, one earned run, one walk, three strikeouts and 3.86 ERA as the Falcons pulled off a 12-11 win in the second game of a doubleheader that day and the third game of a four-game series.
He was back in action Feb. 18 at home to Angelo State, pitching two innings, two runs, two earned runs, one walk, one strikeout, one wild pitch, one batter hit by pitch and 9.00 ERA in a 6-5 Falcon win in the final game of a four-game series.
Wenske worked two innings in an away game against Texas A&M-International with two hits, four runs, four earned runs, two walks, four strikeouts, one double, two batters hit, 18.00 ERA and 50 pitches thrown in a 6-1 Texas A&M-I win in the second of a doubleheader and the third game of a four-game series.
In the field, he allowed one stolen base.
His next mound duty came on March 2 at home in the second game of a doubleheader and third game of a four-game series against Texas A&M-Kingsville where he pitched one inning, one hit, one strikeout as the Falcons came up short 6-5.
Wenske worked 2/3 innings the next day against the Javelinas as TAMUK took a 5-2 win in the final game of the four-game series..
He pitched 1 1/3 innings at St. Edwards on March 8 in the opening game of a four-game series, two hits, one strikeout in a 3-1 Falcons win. Wenske allowed one stolen base.
Wenske was back on the mound against St. Edwards on March 10 in the final game of the series, going 1/3 innings in a 7-6 win for St. Edwards.
He pitched 2/3 innings at home March 15 against West Texas A&M, one walk, one strikeout and one wild pitch as the Falcons took an 8-5 loss in the opener of a four-game series.
On March 17 against WTAMU in the closing game of the series, Wenske worked two innings, three hits, six runs, one walk, one strikeout, one wild pitch in the 15-8 loss for UTPB. In the field, he had one chance with one assist, 1.000 fielding and allowed one stolen base.
Wenske pitched 4 1/3 innings March 23 at Eastern New Mexico, seven hits, four runs, four earned runs, one walk, two strikeouts, two doubles, one wild pitch, 66 pitches and a 8.31 ERA as the Falcons earned a 7-5 win in the first game of a doubleheader that day and the second game of a four-game series. On defense, he had two chances, one assist, one error for 0.500 fielding and helped out in one double play.
He was on the bump for 3 2/3 innings in a home game against Cameron in the second game of a four-game series and the first game of a doubleheader on March 29 with three hits, two runs, two earned runs, two walks, six strikeouts, one double, one walk, one balk and a 4.91 ERA in a 6-2 UTPB victory.
Wenske tossed for one inning April 9 at home to Sul Ross State in a single-game series with one hit, one run, one walk, three strikeouts with the Falcons exploding for a 34-2 win.
April 13 at Texas-Tyler in the first game of a doubleheader and second game of a four-game series, he went 3 2/3 innings with seven hits, four runs, four earned runs, one walk, three strikeouts, one double, two home runs, 58 pitches thrown and 9.82 ERA in a 7-6 Falcon victory for Wenske’s first win of the season.
In the field, he allowed one stolen base and caught one runner stealing base.
At home to Arkansas-Fort Smith April 18 in the closer of a doubleheader and the second game of a four-game series, he pitched four innings, six hits, three runs, one earned run, one walk, five strikeouts, two doubles, one wild pitch and a 2.25 ERA in a 9-6 UTPB win.
In the field, he had one chance for one assist for 1.00 fielding.
April 27 at Oklahoma Christian in the third game of a four-game series, Wenske was on the hill for 4 2/3 innings, six hits, five runs, five earned runs, one walk, six strikeouts, two doubles, two home runs, one batter hit by pitch, 80 pitches thrown and a 9.64 ERA in a 21-9 Falcon win which was Wenske’s second win of the season. In the field, he had two chances, one putout, one assist and 1.00 fielding. He allowed one stolen base.
In a home game against UT-Tyler on May 3 in the opening game of a best-of-three series in the Lone Star Conference Championships Opening Round, Wenske ceded one run, one earned run, two walks, one batter hit by pitch and 99.00 ERA as the Falcons fell 7-3.
Wenske started on the mound May 5 against, UT-Tyler, helping the Falcons to a 10-6 win to win the round 2-1 with five innings pitched, two hits, two runs, two earned runs, two walks, five strikeouts, one double, one wild pitch, 3.60 ERA and his third win of the season. On defense, he allowed one stolen base.
Against Arkansas-FS May in the conference tournament, Wenske started and pitched six innings, eight hits, three runs, three earned runs, one walk, three strikeouts, one double, one batter hit by pitch, 99 pitches thrown and 4.50 ERA in a 4-3 Falcon win. In the field, he had three chances, one putout, two assist and 1.00 fielding.
Wenske’s final game of the season was May 19 at Lubbock Christian as he started, went three innings, five hits, seven runs, seven earned runs, two walks, five strikeouts, one double, one triple, three home runs, 67 pitches thrown and 21.00 ERA as UTPB fell in a 20-13 shootout in the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament.

Wenske has transferred to Wharton Junior College where he will be playing his sophomore year of baseball and is slated to pitch.
