Shiner boys basketball: Comanches play four, win one at Schulenburg Tournament to officially open the 2024-25 season
The Shiner Comanches basketball team opened the season last week at the Schulenburg Tournament, winning one and losing three games.
Brazos 55, Shiner 43
Wallis Brazos welcomed the Comanches to the 2024-25 season by hitting eight triples, six of them in the first half, to hand them a 55-43 defeat Friday afternoon to open the tournament.
Elijah Milligan and CJ Kleas each sank a three as the Cougars opened the game with a 6-2 lead.
Shiner got back into the game with a 6-0 run as Jared Werner assisted on a Landen Christensen bucket, Carson Schuette made a shot and Werner put back a missed bucket for an 8-6 Comanche lead.
Brazos made two more threes, both from the hands of Haiden Hickman to put up a 12-8 lead and then both teams scored one more bucket, leaving Brazos ahead 14-10 at the end of the quarter.
In the second frame, managing a 19-13 lead, the Cougars went on a 11-2 run for a 30-15 halftime lead with six field goals with all but one coming from inside the circle. Schuette got the field goal for Shiner during the run.
Shiner scored nine of the first 13 points of the third period with three buckets from Schuette, including a triple, and a three-point play by Cauy Herman.
The Comanches got within 36-29 before Brazos concluded the quarter with a 6-0 run.
Shiner got within 46-40 following a triple and layup by Herman, and Christensen turning an offensive board into a three-point play. Brazos then scored nine of the last 12 points of the game.
Hickman was the top scorer with 19 points and two triples while Ayden Harris had 14 points and four treys.
Schuette paced Shiner with a triple and 15 points while Herman finished with 10 points.

Victoria St. Joseph 58, Shiner 44
A 26-6 third-quarter run by Victoria St. Joseph helped allowed them to overcome a small halftime deficit to defeat Shiner 58-44 later on Friday.
Christensen had two triples and a dozen points to lead Shiner while Herman had 10 points with Boe Boehm and Schuette scoring six apiece. Nick Bludau led St. Joseph and all scorers with 19 while Bennett Ferguson added 18 points.
The Flyers opened the third frame with a jumper by Charlie Stefka to pull the score even at 28-28. St. Joseph would then continue, going on a 15-2 run with Werner scoring the bucket for the Comanches.
Herman stopped the run with a jumper after taking a Schuette pass. The Flyers would then outscore Shiner 9-2 the rest of the quarter.
Behind 54-34 early in the final period, Shiner refused to stop battling, going on a 10-4 run with triples from Reese Carson and Christensen and two buckets by Herman.
St. Joseph opened the contest with the first six points; Shiner then scored when Boehm got a steal and converted a jumper, followed by some free throws by Christensen and a Jayden Shimek basket; Christensen later hit a triple to tie the game at 9-9 and a Boehm basket after winning an offensive rebound gave the Comanches a 13-11 lead at the end of the quarter.
Schuette scored six points in the second frame as each team booked 15. Bludau sank 10 points to lead the Flyers.

Werner put in 13 points, Christensen added a tres and 12 points while Schuette contributed one triple and 11 points as Shiner came up short to a team from Australia 46-41.
The Aussies led 10-6 after the first quarter and went on a 13-10 run for a 23-16 halftime lead. Aussies managed a 16-14 run to up their lead by a couple of points and Shiner scored 11 of 18 points in the fourth frame to try to mount a comeback.
The Aussies were paced by Lucas Rendle who netted 12 points.

Schuette exploded for 31 points and five triples, and Werner bucketed 19 points as Shiner concluded the tournament with a win, their first of the season, over neighbors Moulton 69-58. Shiner constructed a 23-12 advantage in the first frame and outscored the Katz 16-10 in the second box for a 39-22 halftime lead. The teams shared 28 points in the third quarter and Moulton went on a 22-16 run in the fourth quarter. The Katz’s top scorer was Seth Beyer who recorded 18 points and two triples.
