Shiner cross country:Lady Comanches, Boehm get set for regional meet
The Shiner Lady Comanches cross-country team will try to finish in the top two teams next week at regionals in Corpus Christi to punch their ticket to yet another trip to the state meet.
Shiner Comanche individual runner Boe Boehm will also be gunning for a trip to Round Rock.
For the Lady Comanches, they will have to contend with either Mason, San Saba or Johnson City.
“That district always has a team in top four at regionals,” Shiner head coach Michelle Winkenwerder said. “This year Falls City and Stockdale will also be great contenders to advance to state.”
Boehm will face challenges from fellow district member Ganado as well as Falls City and Stockdale.
“Ganado’s Alan Baez is running sub 17:00s and the Port Aransas team will have several runners in the 17:00s and Stockdale has also a productive season,” Winkenwerder said.
Shiner runners had a good showing on Oct. 9 at the district meet due to holding fast to their hard work and training methods and will look to do the same next week.
“All I can ask our athletes to do is to pin their ears back, do the best they can on that particular day, and allow all the training that we have implemented throughout the year to take over,” Winkenwerder said. “I saw many of our athletes do this at the district meet and many were rewarded for their work ethic.”
“Cross country is one of the hardest sports anyone can ever do because you have so many variables that you compete against; Mother Nature, other competitors, the course, and yourself. If they go out and run their personal best times, now matter the end result, they win in my book.”
The Lady Comanches will run at 9:30 am on Tuesday with Boehm set to run around 10.
The meet site is Texas A&M Corpus Christi’s Dugan Track and Soccer stadium (701 E. Nile Dr. Corpus Christi).
