Shiner football: Comanches to face Brackett in area round
The Shiner Comanches will face Brackett for the second year in a row in the area round at 7 p.m. Friday (tomorrow) at Eagle Stadium in Pleasanton.
The Tigers come into the game at 6-4 and beat Burton 54-34 in the bi-district last week.
Brackett is scoring 35.8 points a game and allowing 26.3 points a contest.
“They have a lot of players back from last year. We are familiar with what they do,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
Primarily a running team, the Tigers have thrown the ball a little more this year. Brackett has used two quarterbacks this season: Quarterback Jack Lewis has completed 106-of-193 passes for 1,323 yards for 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions with leading target Troy Sandoval catching 35 passes for 327 yards and three touchdowns. Sandoval could also take snaps at quarterback.
“Lewis is the primary passer but he is good runner. They will work in Sandoval as well and he is a good runner,” Boedeker said.
Abel Aquirre is the leading rusher with 1,482 yards on 189 carries, 23 touchdowns, 7.8 per carry and 148.2 per game.
“Aquirre is a physical runner. They also have a big offensive line,” Boedeker said.
The Tigers defense will come out in the ’50’ formation.
“They are very aggressive, especially the linebackers,” Boedeker said. “We will need to control the line of scrimmage on both offense and defense.”
Shiner won last year’s area-round game against the Tigers 54-7.
