Shiner football: Shiner hosts county rival Hallettsville
The Shiner Comanches open the 2023 regular season against county rival Hallettsville.
The Brahmas went 7-4 and finished as bi-district finalist last season.
This year, they have a new boss in Levi Montgomery and he inherits a team that has 18 lettermen returning, seven offensive and five defensive starters back.
The Brahmas have speed at the skilled positions led by running back Damarion Austin, and defensive backs Rashaun Sydney, Jashaun Price and Layne Gerke, a Texas A&M commit. Quarterback Jorian Wilson returns from an early-season injury.
“We’re going up against a good opponent that has a lot of tradition,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
He said it will be very important for Shiner to take care of blocking assignments on the offensive side of things, to avoid costly penalties and protect the football.
“On defense, the Brahmas have a lot of good athletes and we will need to tackle well and make some stops,” Boedeker said.
The Brahmas won a close one last year 14-7.
