Shiner girls basketball: LC close out regular season with win

SCHULENBURG — Trailing by three to start the second half, the Shiner Lady Comanches needed a spark.
They got one and got it well in senior JaMya Wright who scored 10 of 15 points and got plenty of rebounds on both ends of the court as Shiner outscored the Lady Shorthorns 28-17 for a 51-43 win Feb. 4 in Schulenburg.
“JaMya was a difference maker in the game. Her rebounding allowed us to get second and third-chance shots and that kept us in the game,” Lady Comanches head coach Kristi Peterson said. “Foul trouble really bothered us. Our senior maturity and experience helped deal with that. Our young ones came in and held their own. Kallee Kifer had five points, some rebounds and good shots. Marie Johnson had a good shot. It is good they got confidence so I can rest some of the other players whenever they have fouls or just need a break. ”
“We did not play our best but responded to adversity and came through with the win.”
Wright had 19 rebounds to complete her double double; Morgan Lenehan had 14 points and nine rebounds; Kailey Boedeker finished with 14 points and eight rebounds; Kifer had five rebounds and Callie Sevcik had five assists.
Early in the quarter, Arianna Vincent’s bucket gave Schulenburg a 28-23 lead.
Wright put back a missed shot and soon after, Jaliyah Barnett got a steal and fed Lenehan for a jumper to get Shiner within 28-27. The ‘Horns went up 31-27 after a three by Jenna Guentert. The Lady Comanches tied the game after Boedeker scored on a Barnett pass and another Wright offensive board led to a bucket.
Two more buckets by Wright later put Shiner ahead 35-33 before Schulenburg made another three to retake the lead. The Lady Comanches scored the last two buckets on jumpers by Lenehan and Wright for a 39-36 lead to end the quarter.
Shiner went ahead 43-36 in the fourth as Sevcik assisted on a Kifer bucket and Kifer later got an unassisted score after an offensive rebound.
The Lady ‘Horns closed the gap to 43-40; Shiner then ended the game with eight of 11 points, with six scored by Lenehan and two by Boedeker.
Lenehan and Boedeker worked to give Shiner a 6-0 lead to start the game. Schulenburg came back with a 12-3 run, mainly on a couple of threes by Miranda Bonner, and then scored five of eight points to lead 17-12 at the end of the first quarter.
Shiner went on a 7-2 run in the second box to force a 19-19 tie. Vincent then scored four points in a 7-4 Schulenburg run to end the frame with Wright and Johnson making a basket each for the Lady Comanches.
