Shiner softball: UHV's Cowan earns Pitcher of Week, throws first no hitter
University of Houston-Victoria junior and Shiner grad Cameron Cowan earned Red River Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honors after picking up her second win in as many starts last week.
Cowan pitched a four-hit gem to help guide the Jags (2-2) to a 3-0 win over No. 2-ranked University of Mobile on the opening day of the LSU-Alexandria Classic Feb 10.
"I'm beyond honored to be named Pitcher of the Week," Cowan said. "I'm so excited to see what great things my team is going to do this year. It's going to be a great season."
Cowan has led the charge for the Jags' pitching staff early in the season, allowing only two earned runs in 13 innings of work with a 1.08 ERA and seven strikeouts.
The Feb. 10 win was the 20th of Cowan's career, which ranks 10th all-time at UHV. It was also the fourth shutout of her career, which is tied for ninth all-time at UHV with Alicia Fikac and Torey Dumont.
It's the second time Cowan has received this honor. The first was in Feb. 16, 2021.
"Cameron led by example for us on Friday," said head coach Lindsey Ortiz. "Not only did she control the pitcher's circle, she was able to control the field and put us in a position to win. I can't wait to see how she continues to build as the season goes on.”
Cowan gets first career no hitter
Cowan followed her Red River Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honor in style.
Cowan delivered her first career no-hitter as the Jags won Game 1 of a doubleheader against Schreiner, 9-0, in five innings on Feb. 14.
The Shiner class of 2020 member struck out a season-high seven batters to notch her third win in as many starts this season.
"It was exciting. I was on a high from last week and carried into today," Cowan said. "We're just going to keep going one batter at a time, trying to attack, start ahead and keep working through the season."
The Feb. 14 win was the 21st of her career, moving her to a tie for ninth all-time at UHV with Peyton Branham. It was also her fifth career shutout, moving her to seventh all-time with Kristen Lindley and Dawn Villegas.
Of her 68 total pitches, Cowan threw 45 strikes. She walked one batter of the 16 she faced.
Ortiz was pleased to see Cowan use her same calm demeanor on Tuesday.
"I love that in a pitcher," Ortiz said. "It doesn't matter if we're winning or losing. You look out and she's the same Cameron no matter what's going on. I respect that so much in her. I'm having so much fun watching her thrive in this role."
