Shiner softball:Cowan sets school, personal records during 2023 season
Shiner grad Cameron Cowan had an outstanding junior season of 2023 for University of Houston-Victoria softball team.
She earned Pitcher of the Week three separate times and set the UHV record in shutouts while also posting a career best wins with 17.
Cowan first saw action in the UHV season opener Feb. 3 in San Antonio to Central Baptist (Arkansas) in the first game of a doubleheader, a 5-2 win for UHV. In the circle, she started the game and picked up her first win in a 5-2 victory for the Lady Jags, pitching six innings, nine hits, two runs, two earned runs, 2.33 ERA, one walk and five strikeouts. In the field, she allowed one stolen base, one runner caught stealing and a RCS of .500.
Her next action came in Feb. 10’s home game to Mobile in Lecompte, La., a 3-0 win for the Lady Jags. At the plate, Cowan was 2-for-3, one run, one strikeout and two total bases on two three plate appearances. She started at pitcher and pitched seven innings for the win to improve to 2-0 with four hits and two strikeouts.In the field, she had three chances, one putout and two assists for 1.00 fielding and allowed one stolen base.
In a 9-1 loss in Alexandria, La. to Georgia Gwinnet, Cowan was 0-for-2 at the plate, one groundout, one flyout and 1.00 groundout-flyout on two plate appearances.
Cowan took part in a 9-0 win in the first game of a home doubleheader against Schreiner University on Feb. 14. She was 2-for-2 one run, two doubles, one RBI, one walk, four total bases, two extra-base hits on three plate appearances. She started in the circle and got the win with a no-hit shutout, one walk and seven strikeouts in five innings. In the field, she allowed one stolen base.
In game two, the Lady Jags fell 4-2 as Cowan was 0-for-3, one hit into double play, one groundout, two flyouts and .500 groundout/flyout on three plate appearances.
Cowan played in both games of a doubleheader at Our Lady of the Lake. In game one, UHV lost 5-3 with Cowan hitting 2-for-4, one double, one RBI, two strikeouts, three total bases, one extra-base hit on four plate appearances. In the circle, she started and took her first loss of the season with 7 1/3 innings pitched, six hits, five runs, four earned runs, 3.82 ERA, one walk, three strikeouts and three home runs. In the field, she had one putout on one chance for 1.00 fielding and two stole bases allowed.
In the second game, UHV fell 12-9 with Cowan going 1-for-4, one RBI and one total base on four plate appearances; in the field, she made one putout on one chance for 1.00 fielding.
Cowan played both games of a road doubleheader against University of St. Thomas on Feb. 21. In game one, UHV took a 9-5 win with Cowan hitting 1-3, one run, one double, one RBI, one walk, one strikeout, two total bases, one extra-base hit and one groundout on four plate appearances.
She started in the circle, picked up the win with seven innings pitches, nine hits, five runs, four earned runs, 4.0 ERA, three walks and two strikeouts. In the field, she had one chance, one assist, 1.00 fielding and three stolen bases allowed.
The Lady Jags lost the second game 8-1 with Cowan going 0-for-3, one strikeout and two flyouts on three plate appearances.
UHV went to Gulf Shores, Ala. for the Gulf Coast Invitational Tournament March 3-5.
The Lady Jags won their first game 3-0 against Webber International (Florida) March 3; Cowan was 1-for-4, one double, two RBI, two total bases, one extra-base hit, two groundouts, one flyout and a 2.00 groundout/flyout on four plate appearances. She started in the circle, pitching seven innings, a five-hit shutout with seven strikeouts; in the field, she had two chances, one putout and one assist for 1.00 fielding.
UHV played Blue Mountain Christian (Mississippi) later that day, dropping a close one 6-4. Cowan went 2-for-4, one run, two total bases, one groundout, one flyout and 1.00 groundout/flyout on four plate appearances.
The Lady Jags played Cumberlands (Kentucky) on March 4, losing 10-2. Cowan hit 1-for-3, one strikeout, one total base, one flyout and three plate appearances.
Also on March 4, UHV was downed by Central Methodist (Missouri) 11-1; she hit 0-for-3 with one strikeout, two flyouts and three plate appearances.
She started in the circle and took the loss with 14 hits, 11 runs, nine earned runs, 12.60 ERA, three walks and two strikeouts. In the field, she had two chances, one putout, one assist for 1.00 fielding.
UHV ended the tournament on a good note, edging Faulkner (Alabama) 8-7. Cowan batted 1-for-4 with one run, two strikeouts, one stolen base, one total base, one groundout and four plate appearances. Cowan started at pitcher and earned the win with 14 hits, seven runs, six earned runs, 6.00 ERA, one walk and six strikeouts. In the field, she had three chances, two assists, one error, .667 fielding, one runner caught stealing and 1.00 RCS.
UHV played a doubleheader at Southwest on March 10, winning in a sweep. In game one, the Lady Jags won 2-1; Cowan was 0-for-4 batting, two groundouts, one flyout, 2.00 groundout/flyout and four plate appearances. In the circle, Cowan grabbed the win with the start, eight innings pitched, 9 hits, one run, one earned run, 0.88 ERA and four strikeouts. In the field, she allowed one stolen base, one runner caught stealing and .500 RCS.

The Lady Jags played a doubleheader at Texas A&M-San Antonio on March 14, going 1-1. In the first game in which UHV won 5-3, Cowan was 1-for-4, one RBI, one total base, one groundout, two flyouts for .50 groundout/flyout and four plate appearances. In the circle, she started and got the win with seven innings pitched, three hits, three runs, two earned runs, 2.00 ERA, two walks and eight strikeouts. In the field, Cowan had two assists on two chances for 1.00 fielding.
In the second game, UHV came up short 9-1 as Cowan had one walk on one plate appearance
The Lady Jags swept Jarvis Christian in a home doubleheader on March 17. In the first game, UHV took a 1-0 victory with Cowan going 1-for-3 with one strikeout, one total base and one flyout on three plate appearances. She started inside the sphere and picked up another win with a five-hit shutout, one walk and three strikeouts. In the field, she had two chances and two assists for 1.00 fielding, one runner caught stealing and 1.00 RCS.
Cowan and UHV returned to action on March 24 in home double header against Huston-Tillotson.

She started at pitcher, got the win with seven innings pitched, two hits, one run, two walks and two strikeouts. In the field, she had one chance, one assist, 1.00 fielding and one stolen base allowed.
Cowan next played in the first game of a home doubleheader against Our Lady of the Lake on March 28, a close 2-0 loss for UHV. At the plate, she was 1-for-3, one total base, two flyouts and three plate appearances. She started the game in the circle and went seven innings, nine hits, two runs, two earned runs, 2.00 ERA, one walk and two strikeouts. Cowan had three chances in the field, getting one putout and two assists for 1.00 fielding; she had one runner caught stealing and 1.00 RCS.
In UHV’s 2-1 win at LSU Alexandria in game one of a doubleheader on April 1, Cowan was 1-for-4, one run, one strikeout, one total base and two groundouts on four plate appearances.
Inside the circle, she started and got the win with nine innings worked, 10 hits, one run, one earned run, .78 ERA, two walks and five strikeouts. In the field, she had one assist on one chance for 1.00 fielding.
On April 2, Cowan played in the first game of a doubleheader at Texas A&M Texarkana, UHV fell short 6-2 and at the plate, she was 0-for-3, one groundout, two flyouts, .50 groundout/flyout and three plate appearances.
She started the game at pitcher, taking the loss with 7 1/3 innings, 10 hits, six runs, six earned runs, 5.73 ERA, three walks, two strikeouts and one home run; in the field, she had three chances, three assists, 1.00 fielding and one stolen base allowed.
Cowan saw action in both games of doubleheader at home to Texas College on April 18. UHV won game one 9-0 with Cowan hitting 1-for-2, one run, one double, two total bases, one extra-base hit, one flyout and two plate appearances. In the circle, she started and got the win with five innings, a one-hit shutout and three strikeouts. In the field, she had one assist on one chance for 1.00 fielding.
In the second game, UHV won 7-5 with Cowan pitching 2/3 innings, with the save and two strikeouts.
Cowan took part in the first game of home doubleheader April 21 against Louisiana Christian, a 6-4 loss for UHV. She was 0-for-2 batting with one groundout, one flyout, 1.00 groundout/flyout and three plate appearances. She started in the circle and took the loss with 11 hits, six runs, four earned runs, 4.00 ERA, two walks and four strikeouts. In the field, she had one assist on one chance, 1.00 fielding and one stolen base allowed
Cowan played in the first game of a home doubleheader against Xavier (Louisiana), a 9-0 win for the Lady Jags; at the plate, she was 1-for-1, one hit by pitch, one sacrifice bunt, one total base, one groundout and three plate appearances. In the circle, she started and earned the win with a four-hit shutout, five innings pitched and seven strikeouts. In the field, she allowed two stolen bases, had one runner caught stealing and a .333 RCS.
UHV split a home doubleheader against Texas A&M San Antonio on April 26 with Cowan playing in both games.
In the first game, UHV won 3-2 with Cowan going 0-for-2 at the plate with two groundouts on two plate appearances. She started in the circle and picked up the victory with seven innings, three hits, two runs, two earned runs, 2.00 ERA, two walks and nine strikeouts. In the field, Cowan had three chances, one putout, two assists, 1.00 fielding and one stolen base allowed.
In the second game, UHV endured a 8-3 loss; Cowan was 0-for-1 hitting, one groundout and one plate appearance. She pitched two innings, one run, one walk and three strikeouts; in the field, she had one assist on one chance, 1.00 fielding.
UHV hosted Southwest in a doubleheader on April 29; Cowan played in the first game, a 2-0 win and went 0-for-3 at the plate, one strikeout, one groundout, one flyout, 1.00 groundout/flyout on three plate appearances. She started in the circle and got the win with five hits, one walk and six strikeouts in seven innings pitched. In the field, she had one assist on one chance for 1.00 fielding.
RRAC Tournament
UHV opened the Red River Athletic Conference championships in San Antonio May 4 against LSU Alexandria, taking a 2-0 win. Cowan went 0-for-3 with one strikeout, one groundout, one flyout, 1.00 groundout/flyout in three plate appearances. Cowan added another start and win in the circle, going seven innings with four hits, two walks and seven strikeouts. She made two putouts on two chances, 1.00 fielding and one stolen base allowed.
UHV fell 10-3 to Our Lady of the Lake on May 5 with Cowan going 0-for-1 withe one strikeout on one plate appearance. Cowan started at pitcher, took the loss with 1 1/3 innings pitched, six hits, six runs, five earned runs, 26.26 ERA and three home runs. In the field, she had one stolen base allowed, one runner caught stealing and a .500 RCS.
Later that day, UHV rebounded with a 2-0 win over Texas A&M Texarkana; Cowan hit 1-for-2 with one run, one total base on two plate appearances. She started in the circle and earned the win with seven innings, three-hit shutout, three walks and three strikeouts. In the field, she had one putout, one assist on two chances, 1.00 fielding.
On May 6, UHV edged Louisiana Christian 9-8 and Cowan was 0-for-1 with one walk, one groundout and two plate appearances. Cowan started at pitcher and worked four innings, five hits, six runs, six earned runs, 10.50 ERA, two walks, four strikeouts and two home runs. In the field, she had two chances, one putout, one assist and 1.00 fielding.
In all for the 2023 season, Cowan batted in 34 total games, going 20-for-82, eight runs, six doubles, seven RBI, five walks, 15 strikeouts, one stole base, .244 average, .295 on base, .317 slugging, one hit by pitch, two sacrifice bunts, 26 total bases, six extra base hits, one hit into double play, 19 groundouts, 25 flyouts, .76 groundout/flyouth and 90 plate appearances.
In the circle, she pitched in 27 games, started 24 games, went 17-6 with two saves, 20 complete games, 157.2 innings pitches, 151 hits, 65 runs, 54 earned runs, 34 walks, 108 strikeouts, 4.79 strikeouts per seven-inning game, nine home runs and 2.40 ERA. In the field, she had 34 games, 38 total chances, 11 putouts, 26 assists, one error, .974 fielding, 18 stolen bases allowed, seven runners caught stealing and .280 RCS.
Cowan was chosen for the All-RRAC First Team and won RRAC Pitcher of the Week three times during the season. She also set the UHV record for shutouts (14) with a 2-0 win over LSU-Alexandria in the opening round of the RRAC.
