After taking the first game of the regional quarterfinal best-of-three against Weimar on the chin 11-0, the Lady Comanches made things more tough for Weimar in the second game but came up short 3-2 to conclude their season.
“This series was night and day for us,” Lady Comanches head coach Jason Keller said.
The 2022 Lady Comanches returns every player next year as they had no seniors and will be reinforced next season with some incoming freshman.
Junior outfielder Riley Rainosek said for a team made up of all underclassmen to reach the third round shows how hard working they are.
“The community knew we were young coming up and we might have had some doubt us,” she said. “But we worked really hard and I am proud of all of us, and I am excited to come back next year to the same group.”
“Our players have talent but they still need to work hard and improve where they are at now. A lot of them are very skilled and if they continue to work hard to improve, they have a chance to be very successful the next few years,” he said. “They will have to understand there will be someone pushing them because next year we will have some sophomores and juniors that will push each other to fight for a position next year. Every year is a new year and nothing carries over.”
Weimar 3, Shiner 2 (Game 2)
What Shiner did in the first game did not have a good return on investment so Keller made some changes to the lineup.
The second game was a whole different one as Weimar managed to squeak out a 3-2 result.
“The second game, you try to give them something they have not seen before or don’t expect,” he said. “We did that on defense and pitching, and Weimar struggled to adjust.”
The changes were  starting freshman Callie Sevcik on the mound and having fellow freshman Dyllan Chrismon close;  playing sophomore (regular starting pitcher) Paeden Vincik at third and later first; junior Teresa Olivas, who is usually behind the plate, started at second base and later switched to third; starting  sophomore Rylee Vancura at catcher instead of third base; moving freshman second baseman Brinley Ramirez into center field and switching junior Riley Rainosek from center field to right field.  When Chrismon came in to pitch, Sevcik stayed in the infield  to play second.
“We felt like we needed to be more athletic fielding bunts since Weimar had five bunts for base hits the other night,” Keller said. “If we could make  Weimar hit the ball, we felt like we had a chance to win. I’m proud of the girls for fighting like they did.
The Lady Comanches grabbed the early lead —Ramirez got a leadoff walk and scored on Vincik’s RBI single.
Weimar responded quickly with their first two hitters, Malaire Mican and Harper Price, picking up walks. Skylar Hegler scored Mican to tie the game and Price scored on a fly ball by Hannah Fishbeck.
Shiner came close to tying the game in the top of the third as Vincik doubled and later reached third on an error but was left stranded.
Price put the Weimar up 3-1 in the bottom of the inning with a  leadoff single and was scored on Fishbeck’s hit.
The Lady Comanches struggled to get base runners until Vancura’s leadoff single in the sixth  but she was later caught stealing second base.
Shiner got agonizing close in its last time to bat —Alaya Boedeker was walked and her runner Aimee Mitchon went to second on a Rainosek sacrifice. Mitchon got to third on a Haley Patek hit and scored on an Olivas single with two outs; Vincik then grounded out to second base to conclude the game.
