The Cardinals will look to stop a two-game skid as they host Tomball Rosehill Christian.
The Eagles are 80-20 in favor of the run on offense and average 203 yards a game.
They are running the same offense as last year but have perfected it.
“Their offense was new to us last year and we had to adjust on the hip last year,” Cardinals head coach Barry Wolf said. “Their offense is similar to us.”
Caleb Davilla is the leader with 352 yards and six touchdowns. Benjamin Moore has 328 yards and two touchdowns while Matthew Peyton had four touchdowns with 214 yards.
Peyton has completed 23-of-32 passes for 499 yards, six touchdowns and one interception.
“They run a diamond formation which is wingback, slot back and pistol fullback,” Wolf said. “They run a lot of misdirection. If defenses know what to look for, they can shut it down but if the defense’s eyes start wandering, it can get lost really quick. Peyton is good with the ball on misdirection and throws decent,” Wolf said. “We also need to key on Caleb Davilla.”
On the defense, leading tackler is Devyn Gay with 48 total, 35 solo, 13 assists, and four tackles for loss.
“They are a veteran defense with everyone coming back,” Wolf said. “Our offensive line needs to block well, and the backs need to run hard and hit the holes.”
St. Paul won last year 26-6.
Shiner at Louise
Louise sits at 2-6 on the year (1-2 in district) and scores 13.87 points a game while yielding 28.87 points a game.
The Hornets run the football on 79 percent on their offensive plays, gaining 131 yards a game.
Leading that attack is Connor Gonzalez who had 430 yards and four touchdowns, and Eric Melchor who had 334 yards on the season and four touchdowns.
Gonzalez has completed 25-of-48 passes for 222 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.
“Gonzalez is a dual-threat quarterback who has speed. Their offense goes through him,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said. “We have to make sure we keep him under wraps. Louise has big offensive line and so we have to keep our pads down on the defensive line.”
The Hornets have shown variety in their formations.
“They have run spread, Slot-T and unbalanced formations. We have to prepare for a lot of different formations,” Boedeker said.
Tanner Lott leads the defense with 41 tackles, 34 solo, seven assists, Dawson Lott had seven tackles for losses, including five sacks.
Gonzalez had four interceptions.
“Their defense is very aggressive with a big line and linebacker blitzes. We have to communicate well on the line, not have turnovers and put drives together,” Boedeker said.
In last year’s game, Shiner blanked the Hornets 68-0.
