Shiner, St. Paul football: Comanches host Pettus; Cardinals travel to Bryan
Shiner and St. Paul continue district play this week.
Pettus at Shiner
The Comanches return home to host the Pettus Eagles.
Pettus is 1-6 (0-2) on the season with the lone win coming against Center Point 23-21
The Eagles is scoring only 8.14 points a game and are allowing opposing teams 35.5 points a game.
Shiner is 7-0 and went to 2-0 in district after holding off Falls City 21-14 last week.
“Every district game is important and we need to be focused on Pettus after that big win against Falls City,” Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
The Eagles run both a Wing-T and spread on offense.
“They will use both systems. We have to to play assignment football on defense and be disciplined,” Boedeker said. “They will run the trap, option, zone read and will pass.”
Running back Felix Flores is the primary ball carrier with Jackson Ramirez and quarterback Ramon Reyna III also contributing.
Pettus runs the ’50’ on defense and while their line is not as big as previous opponents for Shiner, they do have a couple of big kids at end.
“We will need to win the line of scrimmage and put together some good drives,” Boedeker said. “We did good with penalties last week and also stress no turnovers in these district games.”
Last year, Shiner won 50-0.
St. Paul at Bryan Brazos Christian
The Cardinals play an unbeaten Bryan Brazos Christian team on the road.
The Eagles are putting 42.14 points on the scoreboard per game and are holding teams to 9.28 points a game.
“They have good players and plenty of weapons on offense,” Cardinals head coach Barry Wolf said. “They have size on both lines.”
Bryan Brazos Christian has averaged 208 passing yards a game and 137.6 rushing yards.
Hudson Jacobus has completed 75-of-139 passes for 1,456 yards and 19 touchdowns.
Top targets are Micah Saxe (25-527, 5 touchdowns) and Karsen Ramsey (32-503, 8 touchdowns).
Reed Jackson leads the rushing game with 284 yards and eight touchdowns.
“Their running back is good; the receivers are good. Our defense will have its work cut out,” Wolf said. “We need to stop the run game and then they will go to the passing game. They are efficient at both of them.”
Ty Urban leads the defense with 43 tackles, 32 solo tackles, 11 assists and two tackles for loss.
St. Paul will need to eliminate penalties and block well as they are going up against a bigger defensive line.
“We will need to be able to move the ball,” Wolf said.
St. Paul played Brazos Christian both in the regular season and in the playoffs last season. The Eagles won the regular-season game 36-6 and prevailed in the playoffs.
