Shiner, St. Paul football: District play starts for Shiner football teams

Shiner and St. Paul start district this Friday as the Comanches host Charlotte for Homecoming and St. Paul is at Conroe Covenant Christian.
Charlotte at Shiner
The Comanches went 5-0 in district and are coming off of a bye week to host the Trojans.
“The bye week came at a good time as we had a couple of guys healing from injuries,” Comanches head coach Daniel Boedeker said. “It was also good to slow things down and reteach some things.”
The Trojans are 3-2 overall including a forfeit 2-0 win over Compass Rose Legacy.
Charlotte is scoring 26.6 points a game and is yielding 17.4 points a game.
Boedeker says the Trojans run the option on the offense.
“They will run out of one-back formations, and are good at running misdirection and counters,” he said. “Our defense will need to play responsibilities and read keys.”
The Trojan defense is varied but bases out of 3-3 stack with man coverage and mixes up the front line.
“From what we’ve seen on film, we will be anticipating a five-man front so we have to do a good job on offensive blocking,” Boedeker said.
St. Paul at Conroe Covenant Christian
The Cardinals are on the road to open district, taking on Conroe Covenant.
St. Paul won three of five non-district contests and are ready to make a push for the playoffs.
The Cougars are also 3-2 on the season and have scored 32 points a game while yielding 20.2 points a game.
“They are a better team than last year,” St. Paul head coach Barry Wolf said. “Last year, they had players that were young and inexperienced at the varsity level. Those players have matured. They are playing with confidence.”
St. Paul will face another pass-happy offense in Covenant and it will mostly be short throws.
“They will throw a lot of screen passes to receiver Brady McDaniel. “When they do run the ball, Joshua DeRamus will get the carries.”
Evan Marquez leads the defense and he excels at disrupting opposing offenses.
“If we can control Marquez, I feel we will be able to run the ball,” Wolf said. “Covenant does give up lots of points and yards.”
