Shiner, St. Paul football: Shiner, St. Paul close out regular seasons

City of Shiner football teams close out the regular season this week: The Comanches host Yorktown and St. Paul is at Temple Central Texas Christian.
Yorktown at Shiner
The Wildcats are 6-2 and are third in district with a 3-1 record , having a loss to Falls City.
Yorktown is scoring 44.75 points a game and allowing 26.62 points a contest.
“Yorktown is definitely going to be a good opponent for us,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
Their offense is led by Brody Metting who is the team’s leading rusher with 1,141 yards, 18 touchdowns, 163 yards a game and 9.6 yards a carry. McKenzie Yanta had 709 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Metting has thrown for 753 yards on 37-of-68 passing for nine touchdowns and five interceptions and averages 107.6 passing yards a game. Matthew Olguin had 297 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
“They like to run the quarterback power and the zone read,” Boedeker said. “Metting makes big plays for them. Yanta is a big contributor and they have several receivers that are solid. Yorktown has several weapons and we will have to play assignment football.”
Bryce Chandler leads the defense with 51 total tackles, 13 solo, 38 assists and six tackles for loss. The ‘Cats have intercepted seven passes and recovered seven fumbles.
“Their defensive ends are solid; the linebackers are athletic and like to blitz. Our offensive line will have to keep their eyes up, communicate and block well.”
The Comanches won last year’s game 54-13.
St. Paul at Central Texas Christian
The Cardinals close out the regular season at Central Texas Christian.
Central Texas Christian is 8-1 overall and is second in district with a 3-1 record and currently having the head-to-head tiebreaker over TRC (3-1) by a way of a 49-0 win earlier in the season.
The Lions score 45.8 points a game and surrender just 14.4 points. game.
“They are a really big team that is very good,” St. Paul head coach Barry Wolf said.
CTC leans toward the run on offense with 251 yards a game, led by Austin Evans who has 1,283 yards, 16 touchdowns, 183.3 yards a game and 11 yards a carry.
Cooper Smith had thrown for 868 yards, 10 touchdowns and four interceptions with 124 yards per game.
His main target is Ike Klimchuk (20-335, five touchdowns).
“They will run the ball most of the time; when they pass, they are not deep passes. They throw screens, curls and outs. Quarterback will be under center at times and also in the shotgun,” Wolf said. “Our defense will need to stop Austin Evans, and be ready for short passes and not let them complete a deep ball.”
Leading tackler is Hunter Evans who has 73 tackles, 56 assists, 17 solos and two tackles for loss; Austin Evans had three sacks on the ear.
“Our offense will need to minimize turnovers and establish a run game,” Wolf said. “We will also need to throw the ball better.”
The Cardinals are not mathematically eliminated from the posteason. The Cardinals and Indians are both 1-3 in district heading into tomorrow’s game. The Indians play Conroe Covenant (0-4). A win by the Cardinals over CTC combined with Conroe Covenant earning a win over Sacred Heart would put St. Paul in fourth place.
The Lions beat St. Paul 43-14 in 2024.
