Shiner volleyball: Shiner places second in Silver at Cuero Classic Tournament

    The Shiner varsity volleyball team got runner up in the Silver Bracket of the Cuero Classic last week, going 3-6.
    Thursday’s matches
    The Lady Comanches won one and lost two in three matches on Thursday. They defeated Gonzales 2-0, and lost to Beeville Jones 2-0 and Industrial 2-1.
    Beeville Jones 2, Shiner 0
    The Lady Comanches played 4A Beeville Jones on Thursday morning, falling 28-26 and 25-11.
    The Lady Trojans led 9-7 after the first set’s opening 16 points; Shiner then tied the game with two straight points with Kayden Smith putting down a kill to even things up. 
    Beeville went on a 8-1 run, including a Kayley Ford kill and ace by Kloe Avalos. 
    Lexi Boner got a kill and Harlee Sevcik came up with a block to help Shiner get within 17-13. The Lady Comanches cut deeper into the Beeville’s lead, coming within 19-17 as Sevcik added a block and kill. 
    A Wallace kill and an ace by Addie Prove helped Shiner eventually tie the at 21-21.
    Shiner eventually got a 25-24 lead with help from two kills by Smith, one by Kylynn Ramirez and another from Wallace. The Lady Trojans closed out the set with four of the next five points.
    In the second game, Julianna Delarosa got two aces as Beeville led 6-1 after seven points.
    A Sevcik kill allowed Shiner to get within 7-4. Beeville then outscored the Lady Comanches 6-1 again to post a 13-5 lead and went to capture the set with a 12-6 run.

    Shiner 2, Gonzales 0
    The Lady Comanches bounced back with a 25-17, 25-19 sweep of another 4A team in Gonzales. 
    The Lady Apaches recorded the first two points of the game before Shiner went on a 10-3 tear with a Smith kill, aces from Sadie Carter, Wallace and Boner and a block by Kiera Curtis. 
    Shiner went ahead 17-6 on plays from Smith, Ramirez and Boner, and an ace by Sevcik.
    Gonzales was able to pull back some points back with nine of the next 17 points but Shiner ended up ahead 25-17 at the end of the set.
    To open the second game, Shiner scored 10 of the first 14 points. 
    Gonzales went on a 5-2 run to bite into Shiner’s lead some before an ace and kill by Ramirez, and a pair of Boner kills gave the Lady Comanches a 17-12 advantage. 
    Gonzales scored four straight points to get within 17-16. But the serves of Prove helped Shiner end the set and match with an 8-3 run.

    Industrial 2, Shiner 1 
    The Lady Comanches concluded Thursday against Industrial and took the Lady Cobras to three sets but came up short 25-19, 23-25 and 25-12.
    The teams shared the opening dozen points and Industrial jumped out in front with a 6-0 run, and then outscored the Lady Comanches 13-5. 
    Prove got an ace and Smith contributed a kill as Shiner slightly outscored Industrial 14-12 the rest of the way.
    In the second set, Smith had two kills and a block, and Ramirez had a kill as Shiner went ahead 11-4 run to start off. 
    Industrial scored nine of the next 12 and eventually tied the game at 18-18 before taking a 20-19 lead. At 22-22, Shiner went on a quick 3-1 run with a kill by Smith and two from Boner.
    The teams started the tiebreaker with a 6-6 deadlock and Industrial went up 10-7, followed by 9-3 scoring advantage.
    They then finished things off by scoring six of the next eight points.

    The Lady Comanches played three and lost three matches on Friday.

    Sevcik got 12 kills and three blocks but Shiner came up short to the hosts on Friday, 20-25, 25-21 and 25-21.

    Sevcik and Smith combined for 23 kills in Shiner’s match against Santa Gertrudis Academy as SGA got a 14-25, 25-18, 25-176 win.

    Ramirez had 14 digs and nine kills while Wallace had 27 assists as Shiner concluded Friday with a 2-1 loss to Hallettsville (14-25, 27-25, 25-18)

    Shiner beat Gonzales 25-19, 25-19 with nine kill from Smith, and eight kills and two blocks by Sevcik.
