Shiner volleyball:LCs go 1-1 in tri-match with Yoakum, Gonzales

    YOAKUM — The Shiner Lady Comanches started the regular season with the usual tri-match in Yoakum against Gonzales and the Lady Bulldogs.
    Shiner swept Gonzales and lost to Yoakum 2-1 to split the two matches that were best-of-three.
    Patience will be key for the Lady Comanches as they progress through the season with their inexperience.
    “We are young and inexperienced but with time, things will come together,” Shiner head coach Desiree Nitsch said.

    The Lady Comanches started off with a 26-24, 25-14 win over 4A Gonzales.
    The teams split the first 12 points of the opening set; kills from Kayden Smith and Paisly Wallace, along with an ace by Harlee Sevcik, helped put Shiner ahead 10-8. Gonzales then scored eight of the next 13 points. Shiner then went on a 6-1 run with an ace by Lexi Boner, and two blocks and a kill by Sevcik. 
    The Lady Apaches then went on a 5-0 run; the Lady Comanches got a block from Smith as they went on a 5-2 run to close out the first game.
    Shiner opened the second with a 6-2 lead after Wallace got a kill and then served two aces. Gonzales rallied to knot the set at 8-8 before a kill each from Kylynn Ramirez and Smith and an ace from Ramirez gave Shiner 17-10 advantage 
    Gonzales battled to within 17-13 before Shiner scored eight of the next 10 to end the set and the match with Wallace getting an ace and Ramirez adding a kill.

    Shiner won the first game 25-15 before Yoakum came back to down them 25-14 and 25-14 for a 2-1 win.
    After trailing early, Shiner came back for an 8-4 lead on serves by Wallace and an ace by Boner.
    Yoakum came back with a 6-2 run to tie the game at 10-10; the Lady Comanches then scored six of the next eight on serves by Ramirez and Carter, and a Sevcik block. 
    Sevcik contributed two kills and Boner hit an ace as Shiner went on a 9-3 run from that point to take the first game. 
    In the second set, Yoakum scored nine of the first 12 points and later went up 17-6 with help from a Brynlee McCoy kill and Aaliay Rosales ace.  The teams then shared 16 points to allow Yoakum to tie the set at 1-1.
    In the third game, McCoy and Lilly Fojt each got a kill as the Lady ‘Dogs scored the first four points. 
    Shiner went on a 10-7 run to get within 11-10 with plays from Sevcik, Wallace and Boner, and serves from Riley Fluitt. Shiner kept their deficit at one, 13-12, as Sevcik got a block. 
    Yoakum closed out the set with a 12-2 scoring advantage.
