Spikers get two wins to open regular season

The Lady Bulldogs got the 2025 volleyball regular season underway by sweeping their home tri-match against Gonzales and Shiner on Aug. 12, beating Gonzales in two sets and rallying for a 2-1 win against Shiner.

“ Very impressed with how we hustled and how we played while out of system,” Yoakum head coach Kayla Natho said. “We had a slow start in the second set against Gonzales and in the first set against Shiner but finished well. We played with a lot of intensity.”

YOAKUM 2, GONZALES 0

The Lady Bulldogs defeated Gonzales 25- 20 and 26-24 to open the tri-match.

Lilly Fojt and Madie Svec each had kills as Yoakum opened the first game with a 4-1 lead.

Gonzales then went on an 8-3 run. MaKayla Olmedo and Fojt added a kill, and Aaliyah Rosales had an ace as Yoakum got the lead back at 14-10 and then outscored Gonzales 3-1 for a 17-11.

The teams then split 14 points and Yoakum was on the verge of the win before the serves of Parker Petras brought Gonzales within 24-20 before Fojt got the setwinning kill.

In the second game, the Lady Apaches scored nine of the first 15 points.

Jordyn Driskell then got a kill which started a 7-3 Yoakum run including aces from Taylor Velek and Rosales.

The Lady Apaches forced a 16-16 tie before Yoakum went up 22-19 with assistance from a McKenna New ace and a Deveah Rios kill.

Gonzales then scored two of the next five and Yoakum completed the task with two straight points.

YOAKUM 2, SHINER 1

The Lady Bulldogs dropped the first set to Shiner 25-15 before rallying for a pair of 25-14 wins.

Yoakum saw a small advantage at the start fade out to an 8-4 deficit before outscoring Shiner 6-2 for a 10-10 tie.

The Lady Comanches then went on a 6-1 run with an ace by Kylynn Ramirez, one by Sadie Carter and a block by Harlee Sevcik for a 16- 11 lead before going on a 9-4 run to win the first game.

A Brynlee ace was part of a 9-3 Yoakum run to open the second game and the Lady Bulldogs then scored six of the next eight for a 15-5 lead.

Shiner eventually got within 21-13 and Yoakum then outscored them 4-1 to take the second set.

A Rosales ace and Fojt kill put Yoakum up 3-0 at the outset of the third game.

Plays from Hannah Garvin and Rios helped give Yoakum a 9-5 lead.

The Lady Comanches scored seven of the next 11 points to get within 13-12 and Yoakum wrapped up the rally with a 12-2 run.
