St. Paul’s baseball team exploded on offense early to get the job done quickly.
The Cardinals scored 14 runs on 11 hits in the first frame May 10 in the area-round game at home to Bryan Allen Academy and raced off to a 17-0 win in three innings.
Zak Johnson (two innings) and Jackson Ulcak (one inning) combined for a near-flawless game with a no-hit shutout with six and three strikeouts, respectively, sitting every single batter they faced.
Bryan Allen Academy went three up and three down at their three times at bat, not even able to get a single base runner on.
St. Paul’s offense scored early and often to compliment the pitching and the defense standing by as no putouts were needed with Allen Academy unable to put a ball into play.
The Cardinals got six extra base hits and 16 hits total.
Sean Humes singled and went home on Noah Boedeker’s double before his brother, Nate, scored both players on a home run.
“We have a game Friday (May 13) so we needed to keep (Zak) Johnson’s pitch count down. Our offense took care of the ball. Nate’s (Boedeker) home run in the first inning lifted every body and we got rolling after that,” Cardinals head coach Charlie Mieschen said.
After the home run, Fisher Davis was walked; Jackson Ulcak was safe after a dropped-third strike.
Runner Jake Yackel was doubled in by Johnson, Ulcak later scored; Ethan Eastlering singled and got to second on an error and later scored on a passed ball. Zeke Rodriugez was walked and eventually scored on a Kade Leist sacrifice for an 8-0 Cardinal lead.
St. Paul would go on to score six more runs in the inning.
Nate Boedeker’s two-run homer was his first of the season and came at a good time.
“I feel really good about the home run,” he said. “As soon as we stepped onto the field, we were ready to play.”
In the bottom of the second, Humes singled and scored on an RBI single by Noah Boedeker, who continued on to third on a two-base error. Noah Boedeker was doubled in by Nate Boedeker and later Yackel scored on a hit by Johnson.
