St. Paul boys basketball: SP edges Bracken for top seed

The St. Paul Cardinals earned the top seed of their district with a win over Bracken Christian Feb. 9 in San Marcos and lost in a close game  to San Antonio DaVinci Friday in a playoff-warmup game.

St. Paul outscored the Warriors 18-12 in the final quarter to take an 42-41 win after trailing for three quarters.
Bracken led 16-4 after the first frame and an 8-4 scoring advantage by the Cardinals got them within 20-12 at halftime.
St. Paul further cut into the lead with a 12-9 run in the third quarter.
Jack Ehrig hit two treys and deposited 16 points to lead the Cardinals while Jace Matias had 14 points and one triple.

A 24-18 run by SA DaVinci Lions in the third quarter helped them to a 69-67 win over St. Paul at home.
St. Paul led 22-19 after one quarter and each team bucketed 16 points in the second quarter. Down 59-56  to start the final eight minutes, St. Paul outscored the Lions 11-10.
Ehrig led the Cardinals with 17 points and three treys; Carter Chilek sank 13 points and Matias added 10 points.
For the Lions, Ryan had 28 points with four triples, and Larsten converted five treys and finished with 20 points.
The Cardinals were scheduled to play Galveston O’Connell at home in the area round on Tuesday,
