St. Paul football: Cardinals capture Conroe Covenant 56-28 to start district season

    Sam Perez rushed for 194 yards and four touchdowns while St. Paul scored two touchdowns on special teams to win big in Friday’s district opener at Conroe Covenant, 56-28.
    Perez gave the Cardinals a 14-0 lead with touchdown runs of 59 and 4 yards in the first quarter.
    St. Paul scored three in the second quarter — Jack Ehrig caught a 46-yard pass from Tyler Pendley, and Perez scored on runs of 6 and 5 yards. The Cougars got within 35-6 on an 8-yard pass.
    Covenant scored first in the third frame on a 71-yard run; St. Paul got a 52-yard touchdown run by Carter Chilek and an 80-yard punt return for touchdown by Jace Matias.
    In the fourth quarter, the Cougars scored on a 1-yard run, Donnie Jones returned the kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown and the Cougars scored on a 16-yard pass.
