St. Paul volleyball: Lady Cards VB wins silver consolation at Rice Consolidated

St. Paul went 3-5 and won the Silver bracket consolation championship in the Rice Consolidated Tournament last Thursday through Saturday.
Thursday  Pool A
SP 2, Fayetteville 0
St. Paul played Fayetteville in its first tournament action, sweeping the Lady Lions 25-12 and 25-18.
The Lady Cardinals led 17-12 after the first 29 points of the opening set.  Riley Mozisek contributed a kill and an ace during St. Paul’s 8-0 run to close out the first game.
With the serves of Scotti Beseda, the Lady Lions opened the second game with a 4-1 lead after five points.
Mozisek got an ace and Addy Matias added a kill as the Lady Cardinals quickly turned things around with a 4-1 surge of their own and later took a 7-6 lead on a Faith Brown ace. Fayetteville then scored four of the next five points.
Plays from Mozisek  and an Emery Kennedy kill helped the Lady Cardinals gain a 14-13 lead followed by them going on a 5-3 run. 
Three Brown aces and a Mozisek kill got St. Paul the win with a 5-0 run from a 20-18 advantage.

Flatonia 2, St. Paul 1
The Lady Cardinals played Flatonia for the second time in a week and half. Unlike the Aug. 19 meeting in Shiner the Lady Bulldogs managed to edge St. Paul 25-19, 21-25, 25-12.
In the first set, Quinn Arnett was the heroine for Flatonia with several kills as they led 5-2 after seven points. 
A Matias kill and Annabelle Collins ace got St. Paul within 6-4; the Lady ‘Dogs then outscored the Lady Cardinals 5-3 and soon were ahead 16-11.  Collins had an ace  and  Mozisek made a kill as St. Paul scored five of the next six points. Flatonia then used an 8-3 run to conclude the first game. 
In the second game, Flatonia recorded six of the initial eight points; St. Paul took control at 10-7 with an 8-1 run on a couple of aces from Brown and a Mozisek kill. The teams battled to an 11-11 tie which was followed by a 7-3 Lady Cardinal surge on the serves of Skylar Mozisek and a Riley Mozisek kill. 
The Lady ‘Dogs eventually were within 21-18 and the Lady Cardinals slightly outscored them 4-3 to win the set and tie the match at 1-1. 
In the third game, St. Paul led 4-2 early but the Lady ‘Dogs had another ideas and went on a 8-0 run before later getting out ahead 17-8.
St Paul got a few points back with a couple of Riley Mozisek kills before Flatonia took the set by 13 points to win the match.

The day ended on a high note for St. Paul as they swept Bloomington  25-6 and 25-14.
The Lady Cardinals scored 10 of the first 13 points as Riley Mozisek, Kennedy and Reese Chilek all had kills. From 10-3, St. Paul went on a 8-2 run with aces from Brown, Collins and Riley Mozisek. 
St. Paul closed out the set with eight of the next nine as Tatum Walker got two aces, Skylar Mozisek converted one ace and Collins had another kill. 
In the second set, Skylar Mozisek dropped in an ace or two and Collins had another kill to put St. Paul ahead 4-0 early.  Bloomington would not go down easy in this set, scoring eight of the next 14 to get within 10-8.
The Lady Cardinals then went on a 9-3 run and then went on a 6-3 run to finish the set out with kills by Riley Mozisek, Matias and Chilek.

Burton 2, St. Paul 0
The teams shared the first 10 points of the first set in the first match of day for the Lady Cardinals. 
Burton scored four of the next five points; St. Paul rallied for three straight points with Walker getting an ace to knot the set. The Lady Panthers took a 19-14 lead. St. Paul came back with a 5-2 scoring advantage with serves by Brown and a Riley Mozisek kill. 
Burton closed out the set with a 4-0 run with an ace by Adison Hamel and kill by Natalie Hodde.
Matias and Collins each got a kill as St. Paul scored the first four points of the second game.  The Lady Panthers then went on a 10-0 run; the Lady Cardinals rallied with 11 of the next 16 points on a kill by Riley Mozisek, and a block by Skylar Mozisek and Matias.
Burton then scored five straight points before St. Paul got within 23-20 with plays by Collins, Chilek and Riley Mozisek. Burton completed the game and match with 2-1 scoring advantage.

St. Paul got one of their toughest matches of the tournament so far against 2024 UIL 2ADII state finalist Iola.
The Lady Bulldogs defeated St. Paul 25-9 and 25-14. The teams shared the first eight points and Iola went on a 11-1 run and then scored 10 of the next 14 points. 
Iola opened the second set with a 7-1 lead after eight points. Chilek and Riley Mozisek made some plays to get the Lady Cardinals within 10-6.
The Lady ‘Dogs went up 18-9; St. Paul then went on a 5-3 run with a block by Kennedy and a Riley Mozisek ace. Iola then scored four straight points to end the game and match.

La Grange 2, St. Paul 1
The Lady Cardinals won the opening set against the Lady Leopards but lost two straight to fall 21-25, 25-22 and 25-13.
In the first game, there was eight early ties before St. Paul went ahead 17-16. The Lady Leopards took a 21-19 lead but St. Paul rallied with a 6-1 run with the service of Kennedy and Matias got a kill.  In the second set, La Grange led 7-2 after nine points with the play of Brion Williams and soon established a 14-5 lead. St. Paul outscored La Grange 6-1 with serves and aces by Riley Mozisek and Kennedy. 
La Grange took a 22-14 lead and looked to soon end game-two proceedings until two Matias aces and Riley Mozisek kills helped get St. Paul within 24-19 and then closed the gap to 24-22 before La Grange got the set winner. In the third game, from a 9-9 tie, La Grange outscored the Lady Cardinals 11-4 to take the match.

The Lady Cardinals were dealt a 25-15, 23-25 and 25-15 loss to Lexington in their first match on  Saturday. Skylar Mozisek had 22 assists and 20 digs with Riley Mozisek had 13 digs and 11 kills.

St. Paul reversed an earlier result against La Grange with a 25-20, 25-19 sweep to take third sport in the silver bracket.
Collins had seven kills and Matias chipped in two blocks.
