AUSTIN — The Shiner Lady Comanches and Comanches state track team participants picked up two Silver and one Bronze at Mike A. Meyers Stadium in Austin on Friday.
Doug Brooks ended his Shiner High School athletic career with Silvers in the shot put and the discus.
The Lady Comanches 400-meter relay team,  who had one junior, one sophomore and two freshman, placed third in the state.
Doug Brooks wins Silvers, gets PR in both events.
With a best of throw of 161 feet, 2 inches, he picked up a Silver in the boys discus and set a personal best. Brooks also had throws of 149- and 157-2.  Post’s Zach Courtney won the competition handily with 186-6.
In the shot put, he came in second with a personal-best throw of 56, and other throws of 49-11 1/2 and 55-10. Praiyer Jones of Marlin won the Gold with 56-8 1/4. Brooks did have a throw of 59 that would have been the best throw to take the win and be a personal best if not for him getting called for a foul on the throw.
“I threw great in shot put and discus,” he said. “One of throws in shot put was almost 60 feet and would have been a PR (if no foul). All in all, I got two medals.”
Brooks said he knew Jones was going to come out and bring a tough game.
“We both had close throws,” he said. “
Having been part of two straight football state title teams, Brooks is happy to earn more trophies and medals for Shiner in other sports.
“I don’t like to be looked at as a one-way or one-sport athlete,” he said.
