YHS Bulldogs fall to Marion, play in home tournament; YHS Lady Bulldogs Softball win four of five

YHS BASEBALL

The Bulldogs lost to Marion on Feb. 27 and competed in its home tournament Thursday through Saturday.

MARION 2, YOAKUM 0

Marion scored one run in the fourth inning and one run in the seventh inning to blank Yoakum 2-0 on Feb. 27 in Yoakum.

Yoakum outhit Marion 6-5 with Qyion Williams going 3-for-4 with one stolen base.

Wyatt Hanzelka took the loss for Yoakum with 4 1/3 innings pitched, two hits, one run, two walks and five strikeouts. Ty Gordon pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief with one run on three hits, three walks and one strikeout.

Sutton Pavliska led the defense with four putouts and one assist.

YOAKUM TOURNAMENT VICTORIA WEST 4, YOAKUM 1

The Yoakum Bulldogs scored at their first time at bat against Victoria West before West rallied for a 4-1 win Thursday in the Yoakum tournament. West scored one run in each of the second, third, fourth and fifth innings.

Qyion Williams went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored Yoakum’s run; Brett Lerch hit 1-for-2, double and RBI.

O. Blanco pitched the first 3 2/3 innings, nine hits, three runs, three batters hit, two walks and three strikeouts.

E. Cook worked 2 1/3 innings in relief, allowed a run on two hits, one batter hit, one walk and two strikeouts.

YHS SOFTBALL

Yoakum softball won against Edna and went 3-1 in the Schulenburg Tournament.

YOAKUM 16, EDNA 6

Eight runs in the bottom of the second inning helped the Yoakum Lady Bulldogs open district with a 16-6 win over Edna at home on Feb. 27.

The Lady ‘Dogs outscored Edna 2-1 in the first frame and led 11-1 after three innings.

Edna added one run in the fourth inning and outscored Yoakum 4-2 in the fifth to get within 13-6.

Yoakum put the game away by adding three runs in the sixth inning.

It was batting practice for the Lady ‘Dogs as they accrued 20 hits; Madliynn Steinmann was 3-for-4 with a run, triple, double and five RBI. Madison Grant hit 3-for-5 with two runs, triple and two RBI; Teagan Ratley was 3-for-4, run and RBI; Destiny Rios was 2-for-4, run, triple, double and two RBI.

Steinmann earned the win in the circle with 1 1/3 innings pitched, three hits, three walks and two strikeouts. Hannah Schultz started and went 4 2/3 innings, 10 hits, six runs and seven strikeouts.

Lexi Zaruba had five putouts in the field.

SCHULENBURG TOURNAMENT CUERO 8, YOAKUM 5

After dropping their first game to Cuero, Yoakum rallied for three straight wins to finish 3-1 at the Schulenburg Tournament Friday and Saturday, March 1 and March 2.

The second time the Lady ‘Dogs battled Cuero went a lot different.

The Gobblers rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the bottom of the third frame by platting five runs in an 8-5 win on Friday.

The Lady Gobblers run ruled Yoakum 11-1 in the season opener for both teams.

Yoakum got off to a good start in the top of the first with Macie Blakeney and Madison Grant getting singles. Fojt hit a fly ball to left field to score Blakeney and Madilynn Steinmann grounded out to first base, allowing Grant to score.

Hannah Schultz reached on an error and courtesy runner Faith McCloud scored an RBI single by Lexi Zaruba.
