Yoakum baseball: Bulldogs win one at home tournament

The Yoakum baseball team beat Marion and went 1-3 in the Yoakum Tournament last week.

The Yoakum Bulldogs scored five runs in the top of the fifth to rally from 2-0 down at Marion on Feb. 27 to win 7-2. The ‘Dogs added two runs in the top of the seventh to seal the win.
Marion took a 1-0 lead after two innings and doubled its lead in the fourth inning.
Trae Cuellar, Ty Gordon and Sutton Pavliska all got two hits at the plate.
Wyatt Hanzelka picked up the win with four innings, two runs on six hits and four strikeouts. Will Robbins worked three frames in relieg with two hits, one batter hit, five strikeouts and a save.
Pavliska led the defense with four putouts.

Port Lavaca Calhoun 6, Yoakum 2
Both Yoakum and Port Lavaca Calhoun each got 11 hits but the Sandcrabs took a 6-2 win on Thursday.
Yoakum took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and Calhoun tied the game in the top of the second before taking a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning. The Bulldogs got within 4-2 in the fifth inning and the Sandcrabs scored twice in the seventh.
Qyion Williams led the effort at the plate by going 2-for-4 with one run and a double.
Ty Gordon started on the mound and went 2 1/3 innings before making way for Brenton Jacob who pitched 4 2/3 innings.
Will Robbins had four putouts in the field.

Wyatt Hanzelka pitched a three-hit shutout as Yoakum sank Stockdale 8-0 on Friday.
The ‘Dogs led 3-0 after the first inning and scored one run in third before plating four runs in the fourth.
Gordon was the top hitter with a pair of hits, two doubles, RBI and two runs; Sutton Pavliska got two hits with an RBI and a double.
 Pavliska made four putouts on defense.

La Vernia 12, Yoakum 3
The La Vernia Bears used a seven-run, fourth inning to dispatch Yoakum 12-3 on Friday night.
The Bulldogs stayed in relative contention for the first three innings, trailing by no more than two runs.
Each team scored once in the fifth inning.
Trae Cuellar got two hits, scored once, and got a triple and double.
Trey Olivares took the loss with 3 1/3 innings pitched with eight runs on six hits, four walks and three strikeouts. Andrew Lara tossed for 1 2/3 innings in relief with three hits, three runs, four walks and one strikeout. Pavliska led the defensive effort with four putouts and the Bulldogs got a double play in the top of the third when shortstop Will Robbins fielded a ball and assisted on a Cuellar putout, and Cuellar passed to Pavliska at first.
To start the top of the fourth, Caden Fox got a leadoff walk and later scored on the sacrifice groundout from Ethan Dylla.
Colten Collins was walked followed by hits by Tully Scott and Colten Schmid with Scott’s hit scoring Collins. Scott later scored when Colt Brown earned a bases-loaded walk. Schmid went home on a passed ball.
Cash Casas was walked and Caden Fox cleared the bases with a three-run double to put the Bears ahead 11-2.
La Vernia got three hits with a double in the top of the fifth but scored just one run.
Yoakum replied in the bottom of the inning when Cuellar got a leadoff triple and later scored.
To kickoff the game, Scott and Schmid got hits and each later scored. At Yoakum’s first time at bat, Gordon got a one-out walk and later scored on a wild pitch.
In the second square, La Verni scored with a run by Fox and one by Dylla while the ‘Dogs got one run with designated hitter Garrett Green getting a single and scoring on a groundout by Jayden Jones.

Banquette 11, Yoakum 3
Banquette scored four runs in its first time at bat and downed Yoakum 11-3 on Saturday.
Yoakum scored a single run in the third frame. Banquette brought in seven runs in the fourth and Yoakum scored twice in the bottom of the inning.
Yoakum was held to four hits with Williams and Robbins each doubling.
Garrett Green started on the hill and went 1/3 innings; Robbins pitched three frames; Hopkins faced three batters, Cuellar worked 1/3 innings and Jacob also pitched 1/3 innings.
Pavliska made two putouts.
