Yoakum football: Bulldogs return to action in home game against Columbus
Fresh off their bye week, Yoakum returns to district action as they face another big test in the Columbus Cardinals.
“It was a nice bye week. We needed it about four weeks ago but it was good to get a bye,” Yoakum head coach Bo Robinson said.
Columbus is scoring 45.75 points a game and giving up 11.8 points a game. The Cardinals went 6-0 in non district but split their first two district games against Hallettsville and Hitchcock.
“I still feel Columbus is the best team in our district,” Robinson said.”They are very big on the lines and have lots of skilled players.”
The Bulldogs fell in their district opener to Hitchcock on Oct. 7.
Adam Schobel is taking the snaps at quarterback and is passing for 263.8 yards a game and 3.8 touchdowns per game. Jordan Woods averages 103 yards a game receiving and has five touchdowns while Colton Pitchford is averaging 111.8 yards a game and six touchdowns.
JJ Hurd leads the ground game with an average of nearly a 100 yards a game and Ty’Vonne Whitehead rushes for just over 70 yards a game.
“Columbus is very balanced on offense. We are going to have to tackle well and make them one dimensional,” he said.
Leading the Columbus defense will be linebackers Tommy Schobel and John Scobel.
“The Cardinals have a very experienced defense; we have to make sure we battle and establish the run. Their secondary is not going to let our receivers get behind them so we will have to complete short passes and get yards after the catch,” Robinson said.
