Yoakum girls soccer: Yoakum ties San Antonio Memorial 0-0 in district opener

    Yoakum had the lion’s share of scoring chances but could not get one in the back of the net.
    The Lady Bulldogs soccer team kicked off their district schedule with a 0-0 score Friday evening against San Antonio Memorial at Bulldog Stadium.
    Yoakum was scheduled to play its first district game on Jan. 31 at home to San Antonio Young Women’s Leadership but the game was postponed due to weather conditions.
    “We did not play our best game,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Melissa Colman said. “We have a great young team this season but we just did not perform. There is a lot of season left and hopefully, we will be able to turn it around.”
    The Lady ‘Dogs backline and keeper played solid, holding SA Memorial to less than six shots.
    For almost the first 10 minutes, both teams were possessing the ball but could not advance it very far from the center circle.
    The Lady  ‘Dogs first good chance came nearly 14 minutes into the half with a shot wide by Gisela Martinez and a minute later, Rubi Martinez had a shot go wide.
    At around the 23:36 mark,  Daphne Oviedo had a shot on goal that was cleared off the line by a defender. 
    Several minutes later, Makayla Olmedoa had a shot saved; Rubi Martinez shot wide and Oviedo had a shot deflected away from the goal by the keeper.
    With 14:10 left, Oviedo took a corner kick and it eventually reached Brianna Lopez who shot wide.
    “We could not finish a shot. Had plenty of opportunities,” Colman said.
    Yoakum continued to have various shots for the rest of the half and had a golden chance with nearly four minutes left when SA Memorial was called for a penalty. Oviedo’s penalty was saved. The Lady ‘Dogs also had two shots by Adamary Lopez go wide in the last minute of the half.
    First 15 minutes of the second half, Oviedo had a couple of shots. Adamary Lopez took a shot from the left that was saved at the 25:47 mar; Gisela Martinez and Rubi Martinez each had shots.
    With just over 13 minutes left in the game, SA Memorial had a rare  trip close to Yoakum’s goal and had a shot on goal that was saved.
