YISD recognizes four state-level winners

Yoakum ISD honored four esteemed students from totally different fields who made it to state championships at Monday’s meeting.

They included seniors Austin Novasad andAJ Adamek, named to the Academic All-State Basketball teams. Novasad was selected to the All-State first team, and Adamek was named in the All-state second team.

Also recognized were art students Gabriella Grifaldo, a senior, and Isabella Orosco, Yoakum High School junior. Grifaldo painted a portrait entitled “What’s Up,” while Orosco painted a Medusaesque painting called “Snakes and Stones.”

“They had about a month inclass to work on them, and they sure put in the work for that portion of time,” Yoakum High School art teacher Kalynn Bressler said. Each student was awarded a proclamation from the district recognizing their achievement.

More recognition is still to come as banquet season begins for the end of the year, Yoakum ISD board directors also discussed at the May 8 meeting.

The academic banquet will be on May 15, the scholarship banquet on May 22, and Bells/National Honors Society will be May 23. The valedictorian and salutatorian will be announced on May 22.

YISD enrollment is 1,499 for the 2022-23 school year— the same amount as the 2021-22 school year

The district is also celebrating three bond wins from the May election. Propositions A, B, and C were approved by voters on Saturday, May 6.

Props A addresses district-wide safety, security and renovations. Prop B asked voters to move $4.1 million from the maintenance and operations budget to the interest and sinking fund budget and Prop C provides updates to the baseball field and infrastructure at the tennis courts allowing YISD to construct a softball complex on campus.

Proposition D, which addressed football stadium turf and lights, did not pass.

“We asked for $35 million and we received (altogether) $32 million approved,” Superintendent Tom Kelley said. “I want to thank (the board) for all your help and everyone’s support within the community.”
