The Forgotten Freak Show

Lavaca Swimming Pool to host haunted house Oct. 29

Thrill seekers can test their courage with the county’s most harrowing freak show at the Lavaca Swimming Pool this Saturday, Oct. 29, from sundown until 10 p.m. For only $1, guests can brave the second annual haunted house organized by Bob Barrera and other fear enthusiasts.

While last year’s “Haunted Pool” event was deemed a success with nearly 600 guests, Barrera hoped to build on the momentum this year with “The Forgotten Freak Show.” For younger attendees who do not wish to journey through the haunted house, a hay bale maze and Halloween-themed desserts will be available courtesy of event sponsors.

With a shared passion for all things scary, Barrera and his family look forward to scaring their neighbors and embracing the Halloween spirit.

“We’re big Halloween fans. We love to decorate; we love the scary stuff. We do ghost hunts in our personal lives, so we enjoy spooky stuff,” said Barrera at an informational meeting for prospective actors and actresses Oct. 20. “Anything haunted, we’re into it. (The haunted house idea) was a brainchild of ours.”

The freak show will open doors for its first guests at sundown on Saturday at 105 E. Park St. in Hallettsville. Last year’s volunteers said the line to enter stretched to the street with guests from Hallettsville, Yoakum, Weimer, Schulenburg and beyond.

“Last year, I thought it went well. We had a pretty big turnout and we didn’t have as much time (to prepare). This year we have been planning for a few weeks now…,” said Barrera. “We are hoping to grow on last year and make it bigger every year.”
