Prepare your Halloween costume and dust off those old boots; local rodeo enthusiasts organized an event to “bring rodeo back to Yoakum” and raise funds to improve the town’s aging arena.

The Yoakum Rodeo Arena Benefit Playday will kick off Saturday, Oct. 29, with an extensive list of family-friendly attractions, including a leadline, foot race, costume contest, several horseback events, face painting and barbecue. With the event benefiting an arena that represents rodeo sports to many locals, the playday quickly gained momentum with support from many area businesses.

Event organizers Kim Chandler and Brittani Richter listed a roping chute, tractor, drag and watering system as some desired expenditures for rodeo improvements.

“I hope people come to watch and see that we are trying to bring a positive change to this facility and its future,” said Chandler. “There will be kids and adults competing and having fun doing what they love to do with the horses they love to do it with. We are giving away amazing prizes that were all donated by multiple people and businesses throughout the area.”

The organizers expressed gratitude for the organizations, businesses and individuals supporting their mission to improve the facility with years of memories and love for rodeo.

“We put this all together ourselves, but the outpour of people wanting to help, donate, and participate has been amazing,” said Chandler. “I think these types of events have been truly missed by the community and I think a lot of people are excited to have (these events) come back.”
