High temps should be taken seriously

By Murray Montgomery Staff Writer   There’s no doubt that summer has arrived in Texas. In our area, we’ve been dealing with temperatures ranging from 90 to 100 degrees for days – and it doesn’t cool off much when the sun goes down. Even at night, we may see 70 to 80 degrees.

LCHC earns Distinguished Service Award

The South Texas Cattlemen’s Roundup

The South Texas Cattlemen’s Roundup kicked off the 2023 season at the Hallettsville Livestock Commission on Tuesday, June 13. Local 4-H clubs provided the goodies and the event staff. Many wonderful pies, ranch items, and plants were auctioned to benefit Driscoll Children’s Hospital.

The great flood of 1940

BY MURRAY MONTGOMERY Staff Writer One of the worst floods to hit the Lavaca County, Texas, area occurred the last weekend in June of 1940. The Moulton Eagle, a weekly newspaper, had the big story days later in its July 5, 1940 issue. The paper reported that many bridges had been lost in the area.

Kim Kalich receives Special Education Teacher Recognition Award

The Pilot Club of Shiner provided a nomination for a “Special Education Teacher Recognition Award” at the Texas District Convention held in San Marcos in April. Announced on Friday, May 30, the winner of the award was Kim Kalich from Shiner Elementary School.

Comanche Fishing Club holds tournament at Coleto Creek

The Comanche Fishing Club had a freshwater bass tournament on April 22 at Coleto Creek in Victoria. This year, the St. Joseph High School Bass Club, led by Mr. Santiago Marroquin, competed with Shiner, so the event was renamed the Comanche Flyer Tournament.
