BRIDGE REPORT: Emergency burn ban enacted Friday
Latest order from judge's office bans not only fires but most fireworks in Lavaca County, too
By MARK MYERS, Lavaca County Judge
I enacted an emergency burn ban for obvious reasons on Friday, June 17.
Because of the lack of rain and higher than normal heat, conditions throughout the county are just too risky to engage in any burning without substantial risk of fires getting out of control.
The volunteer firefighters throughout the county are answering too many calls and putting their lives at risk for situations that shouldn’t be occurring.
On that note, I would like to just mention that these volunteers diligently answer the call to your emergency using their own vehicles to get to the stations and deploy.
They are unpaid and usually called away from their jobs and their families to respond to our emergencies. Fuel being as expensive as it is, this represents a dedication to our safety that is admirable and deserves our sincere appreciation.
Recently, I witnessed our finest at work when we had the train derailment in Shiner. I watched these volunteers and other first responders performed tasks throughout the night and into the next day with a professionalism that would awe anyone. It was a proud moment to watch our finest in action.
I would venture to say that everyone who is reading this probably knows one or more of these professionals. Thank them and when you can, consider donating to their fundraisers that are held periodically. And may God continue to protect them all.
I would like to close this with a big thank you to all of you for the opportunity to serve you in this capacity. This continues to be one of the greatest honors of my lifetime. May God Bless and Keep you all.
