Commissioners appoint several to DeWitt County Historical Commission

By Clayton Kelley

In a short agenda, DeWitt County Commissioners appointed several to the DeWitt County Historical Commission at the Dec. 19 meeting.

“The new appointments begin in January,” DeWitt Historical Commission Chairwoman Peggy Ledbetter said. “There are 11 new members. We have kept a consistent 50 members list and we have had 11 that we lost either to illness on themselves or their families.”

The newly appointed members as well as the existing members who are renewing their appointments will be for a two-year term from January 2025 to December 2026.

The Commission has also recently published a book written long ago.

“The book is from C.H. Waltersdorf and is about the history of DeWitt County,” Ledbetter said. “He was the editor of Lavaca County News in 1896 and came to DeWitt County. It is a history through the voices of the past citizens. It was all in German, and we translated and published it. We worked on this since the 175th anniversary of DeWitt County in 2021. We have added photographs on some of the names of people. It is very interesting. We will make sure all the museums in the county will have a number of copies of this book and it will be available there.”

Commissioners also received a letter from the Texas Association of Counties Risk Management Pool regarding coverage options.

“We have an insurance policy with the Texas Association of Counties Risk Management Pool that covers us in the event of a cybersecurity crime,” Judge Daryl Fowler said. “We had placed a policy that paid $250,000 on a loss. They have increased that coverage now and we have an opportunity to go to $1 million. The commissioners court made a choice on what we had to set that limit and the premium we want to pay.”

Other items on the agenda include:

• Commissioner received Constable’s Acknowledgement and Pledge in support of traffic patrol supplement from Roy Kuester.

• Commissioners hired Deidra McCollum as the DeWitt County Elections Administrator.

• Commissioners accepted a permit application from Select Water Solutions for the installation of two temporary water lines along Rogge Seifert Road in Precinct 3.
