Council approves several grants

The Moulton City Council approved several grants at the Feb. 11 meeting.

The first grant was toward a project change to the Regional Mitigation Program application.

“We had applied for this grant and were awarded this grant,” City Administrator LuAnn Rogers said. “The original project for the grant was to replace a main water distribution line. However; we’re changing that to drilling a water well. It’s part of the requirements of the grant that if you change the project from the original submission that you made, then you have to get approval from the council to change the project. We have four wells and they’re all really old and we have a couple of them that don’t pump a lot. They’re at their life’s end, so we need to replace those.”

The next four grants are connected to the Texas Water Development Board grant application. These grants will be for water and sewer according to Rogers.

The council also approved a replacement of the fan at the Moulton City Park Pavilion.

“We are going to replace the big fan under the pavilion with two smaller fans,” Rogers said. “We’re trying to get this done before the big events in the summer like the Jamboree.”

There are other park improvements in the works and a more in depth article will appear in a future edition of the Moulton Eagle.

The council also discussed brush pile issues in the city.

“It hasn’t been a real big issue other than recently we had some dumping of huge tree stumps,” Rogers said. “Whoever is dumping them is not cutting them up in smaller pieces and it takes a long time to burn that.”

The Moulton Police Department report showed that in January a total of 374 service calls were made. There were 21 traffic contacts made with ten citations being issued and 11 warnings given.

Police Chief Daniel Beyer also attended the required Texas Police Chief Leadership training in Waco.

“There were 133 Chief’s of Police in attendance from around the state,” Beyer said. “It was long, but informative. It also reminded me of how blessed I am to serve the citizens of Moulton. We have issues but nothing compared to the issues other communities face around the state of Texas.”

Other items on the agenda include:

• Council appointed Greg Murrile as the Emergency Management Coordinator and Fire Marshal.

• Council approved an amended Water Conservation Policy.

• Council approved maintenance on the Wastewater Treatment Plant.

• Council approved an oil agreement with Baytex.

• The mayor will be putting together ideas for street projects.
