January sees snow, rain

For the first time in several years the area saw a nice dusting of snow which reached two to three inches locally.

Snow and sleet fell on January 20-21 causing slushy, icy conditions for anyone trying to travel.

The month also brought 3.13 inches of rain. Rain fell on 11 days with the heaviest of 1.97 inches falling on the ninth. Average January rainfall is 2.91 inches. Rainfall records include 10.90 inches in 2024 and a low of zero in 1909.

January was on the cold side with the mercury dipping below freezing on nine days. Highs averaged 56.3 degrees (normal is 63), and lows hit 37.4 degrees (normal is 42).

High temp for the month was 76 degrees on the fourth and fifth, with a low of 17 degrees coming on the 22nd.

Temperature records include 95 degrees on Jan. 18, 1927, and zero on Jan. 30, 1949.

Fog covered the area on nine days and thunder was heard on one day.
