Memorial Day ceremonies planned in area Monday
Memorial Day is Monday and area service organizations will be hosting meaningful ceremonies in their respective cities in Lavaca County.
The ceremonies will recognize armed service personnel who gave the ultimate sacrifice fighting for America and its freedom in all wars ranging from World War I to the War in Iraq.
Service organizations in Hallettsville, Shiner and Moulton have provided information regarding the Memorial Day ceremonies.
Hallettsville
The Vietnam Veterans of America, Lone Star Chapter 854, American Legion Post Hudgeon’s 230 and the Lavaca Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6382 will host a Memorial Day Service at the Sacred Heart Family Center in Hallettsville.
Starting at 8 a.m., the names of those who sacrificed the ultimate price will be read followed by VVA Chapter 854 member and U.S. Marine Corps. Veteran Don Fannin presenting a tribute to those who died.
Following the tribute, the VVA Chapter 854 Honor Guard will present a rifle salute and Taps will be played as well.
Local groups are invited to bring wreaths, which will be taken to the War Memorial at the Lavaca County Courthouse.
All citizens are invited to attend this meaningful event.
Shiner
The Shiner Chamber of Commerce invites the public to the annual Memorial Day Service set for Monday morning at the Veterans War Memorial in Green Dickson Park.
The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the playing of music followed by the program at 9 a.m.
This year Master Sgt. Manuel “Manny” Cordova of Shiner will serve as the guest speaker.
As in previous years, this year will be honoring all prior service individuals who passed away since the last Memorial Day with a Roll Call of the deceased followed by Taps.
If you would like your deceased loved one remembered during the Roll Call, contact the Shiner Chamber of Commerce with his or her name, and branch of service.
Community organizations are invited to place wreaths at the Veterans War Memorial during the service. Please call the Chamber office at (361) 594-4180, if your group will take part in the presentation of wreaths.
Also, for those planning to attend, you are reminded to bring lawn chairs and arrive early to enjoy all the morning activities.
Moulton
The Moulton American Legion Post 392 will host a Memorial Day ceremony to honor those who died fighting for America and the freedoms we enjoy in all wars involving the United States.
The ceremony will take place at the Old Moulton Cemetery beginning at 10 a.m. with American Legion Post 392 member Randy Rose delivering a keynote address.
The address will be followed by a rifle salute and the playing of Taps.
The public is invited to attend distinguished event.
