Local high school football: Both Shiner football teams on the road
Shiner plays it second straight road game as it visits Poth. St. Paul will meet Dallas CHE of Cedar Hill at 2 p.m. Saturday in Temple at Central Texas Christian’s field.
Shiner at Poth
“Poth is going to be another solid opponent. They have a lot of size on their lines and have good receivers,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
The Comanches are 0-2 with loss to Hallettsville 41-8 and falling short to Industrial 41-34 last week.
“Our tackling was improved in the Industrial game. We just got a little tired and Industrial used their size advantage in the second half,” Boedeker said
The Pirates are 1-1, having fallen short to Blanco 27-23 in their opener and shutting out Falls City at home 33-0 in their second game.
Poth is averaging 28 points a game and ceding 13.5 points a contest.
Luke Rodgers leads an offensive line that includes two-year starters Adahair Ruiz and Jared Padilla. Defensive back Gabriel Silansky was selected as all-state and wide receiver-defensive back Aidan DeHoyoswill see more time on the offense. Linebacker Bryce Burke will also contribute a lot to the defense.
“Poth has good receivers and will throw the ball a lot. We will need to get pressure on the quarterback and tackle the receivers well when they do catch the ball,” Boedeker said.
Boedeker said good blocking will be crucial for the offense since the Comanche offensive line is not very big.
“We will have to have good pad level and stay low, stay on our blocks,” he said.
Shiner scored late in the game to edge Poth 22-21 last season.
St. Paul vs Dallas CHE (Christian Homeschool Educators)
St. Paul will play a Saturday afternoon game against Dallas CHE at Temple Central Texas Christian.
The Cardinals played Muenster Sacred Heart in Frisco last year but the two teams did not schedule a game for 2023, leaving St. Paul with an open week until Das CHE filled the hole.
“Don’t really know a lot about Das CHE; they are a young team that are winless after two games,” Cardinals head coach Mike Jackson said. “They see this as an opportunity to knock off a good opponent and make a name for themselves. I scheduled this game because I did not want us to have an early-season bye.”
St. Paul picked up their first win of the season last week to TMI Episcopal 47-20 (see story pages 6-7), rushing for 428 yards.
“TMI threw the ball on nearly every single play. Other teams will try to attack our defensive weaknesses by throwing the football. We need to be more consistent and continue to improve,” Jackson said.
With a young offensive line, every game offers a chance for the Cardinals to get better.
Jackson said St. Paul needs to develop the ability to connect some long passes.
“Last week, TMI ran a 5-3 stack with Cover 3 which we did not expect and so we ran the ball right at them and it worked. I would like us to take a few shots down field,” he said.
Das CHE is 0-2, with losses Northside Lions Sports Association (50-22) and to Founders Classical Academy (36-14).
The Spartans score 18 points a game and yield 43 points a game on defense.
