Local high school football:Comanches host EB for Homecoming; St. Paul plays at Legacy Prep

The Shiner Comanches host East Bernard for Homecoming 2023 and St. Paul plays on the road to Woodlands/Magnolia Legacy Prep

EB at Shiner
Shiner concludes its non-district schedule with East Bernard for Homecoming and to kickoff a two-game home stand. Next week is Shiner’s district opener against Ganado.
Shiner has come up short in its first three games, all against 3ADI teams, and play the Brahmas where Shiner has won the last two games between the schools.
The Brahmas are 1-2 after losing their first two games to Edna (41-27) and Hitchcock (52-7) before edging Ganado 35-27.
“They are a solid team with lots of tradition. We have to be ready for another physical game,” Shiner head coach Daniel Boedeker said.
East Bernard is balanced on the offense with 240 yards passing and 192 yards rushing yards for a total of 432 yards (144 yards a game)  after three games but has struggled with just an average of 23.0 points a game. The defense has yielded an average of 40.0 points a game.
“East Bernard has moved to the shotgun to get their good athletes the ball more and they do run   zone-type plays but run some misdirection as well,” Boedeker said. “We will need to control the line of scrimamge and continue to improve our tackling.”
Clayton Fajkus has completed 13-of-34 passes for 240 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Alex Henriquez is the lead rusher with 104 yards on 15 carries and one touchdown.
Maddox Crist has 11 catches for 237 yards and two touchdowns.
The Brahams run the split formation on defense.
On defense, Ryder Kovar has 17 total tackles, Seth Morton had three tackles for loss and Tamarcus Sanders had three tackles for loss and three sacks.
Shiner had three or four turnovers in its previous game against Poth which killed some drives and scoring opportunities.
Boedeker said the coaches have stressed to the players about improving ball security.

St. Paul at Legacy Prep
St. Paul plays the second of three straight games outside of Shiner as they visit Woodlands/Magnolia Legacy Prep for a 7 p.m. game on Friday.
St. Paul, after dropping their opener to Flatonia, 49-26, have won two straight, 47-20 against TMI and 48-30. The Cardinals have scored an average of 40.3 points a game and have ceded 33.0 points a game.
Last season, the Lions ran the football but have thrown the ball more this season.
Legacy Prep has chunked the ball on more than half of their offensive plays, averaging nearly 200 yards passing a game. The Lions are 3-0, are scoring 26.0 points a game on offense and allowing 13.0 points a contest.
“Their offense is similar to what we saw against TMI but Legacy Prep does run the football a little more,” St. Paul head coach Mike Jackson said. “Their defense flies quickly to the football.”
Quarterback Wyatt Francis had completed of 39-of-72 passes for 597 yards and seven touchdowns.
Kyle Prazak is the top target with 20 catches for 289 yards and four touchdowns.
Francis is the top rusher with 15 rushes for 70 yards.
“We need to get pressure on the quarterback and play well on the back end,” Jackson said. “We will be okay if we can stop the run and make Legacy Prep one dimensional.”
Having only three passes attempted Sept. 1 against TMI, the Cards threw the ball a little more against Dallas CHE.
“Our play-action pass game is coming along. We need to continue to improve running the ball and make sure we do not have turnovers,” Jackson said.
Last year in Shiner, St. Paul won 49-6, shutting down the Lions’ option offense.
