St. Paul football: KIPP edges SP 30-23
The St. Paul Cardinals came close to getting a win in the season opener at Houston KIPP Sunnyside but KIPP scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to win 30-23.
The Cardinals opened scoring in the first quarter with a 22-yard touchdown run by Jace Matias for a 7-0 lead.
Sunnyside answered later in the quarter but missed the point after to trail 7-6.
KIPP scored in the second frame and got a two-point conversion for a 14-6 lead
In the second quarter, Sam Perez scored an 8-yard run and Carter Chilek added his second point after for a 14-14 tie.
Chilek got a safety for the Cards later in the quarter for a 16-14 lead that St. Paul would take into the locker room at the break.

The Cardinals had 265 yards of offense, 13 first downs, ran the ball 34 times for 259 yards and went 1-of-7 passing for six yards and three interceptions. The Cardinals were 5-of-11 on third-down conversions and 1-for-4 on fourth-down conversions, had four total turnovers, one lost fumble and had one penalty for six yards.
