St. Paul volleyball: Lady Cards win Bronze consolation title at Rice Tournament

The St. Paul Lady Cardinals won four and lost four to win the Bronze Consolation championship last Thursday through Saturday in the Rice Consolidated Tournament

Pool D (Thursday)
The Lady Cardinals won one and lost two matches in the opening day of the tournament, in Pool D play on Thursday afternoon and evening.

St. Paul 2, Palacios 0
The Lady Cardinals started off with the Palacios Sharkettes, winning in two games 25-12 and 25-19.
St. Paul opened the first set with an Emily Stamport ace and the Lady Cardinals led 8-3 after 11 points with Faith Machart contributing a kill.
Machart got another kill, Riley Mozisek converted a kill and Stefany Pokluda scored an ace as St. Paul, ahead 11-5, scored eight of nine points.
Each team scored six points as St. Paul took 25-12 win.
Palacios had a better start in the second with a 6-2 lead afer eight points. It did not stay that way for long. St. Paul went on a 8-1 run with a kill and block from Tori Walker, a Dallyn Pesek ace, another Machart kill and ace by Avery Pesek.
Palacios eventually got with one point, 10-9, before a 10-5 surge by the Lady Cards put them ahead 20-15; St. Paul then scored five of the next nine points, getting help from kills by Walker and Skylar Mozisek for the win.

Flatonia 2, St. Paul 0
The Lady Cards’ second visit with Flatonia in nine days went slightly different than the first time.
The Lady Bulldogs managed a sweep in two close sets, 25-20 and 25-23.
 Flatonia scored the first few points and led 6-2 after eight points total. A Maurin Knesek ace and two kills by Riley Mozisek leveled the score at 11-11. The Lady ‘Dogs then outscored St. Paul 7-3; the Lady Cards came back to within 20-19 before Flatonia went on a 5-1 run to take the first game.
In set No. 2, Sam Moeller and Walker got a couple of kills, Machart got a kill and Avery Pesek got an ace to give the Lady Cards an 11-7 lead after 18 points.
The Lady ‘Dogs replied with 7-1 run for a slight 14-12 lead, followed by four ties until Flatonia led 23-20 and was ready to put the set and the match away until a 4-1 surge by St. Paul got them within 24-23 before Flatonia got the set winner.

Iola 2, St. Paul 0
The Lady Cards closed out the day against Iola, falling to a powerful Lady Bulldog team 25-8, 25-9.
Iola used kills by Shaylee McKown, Lindsey Gooch and Sydney Neville for a 9-1 lead after 10 points in the first set.  Riley Mozisek and Walker put down a kill each to keep Iola from running away with the set until the Lady ‘Dogs outscored St. Paul 12-4. for the 25-8 score.
In the second game, Iola scored six of the first eight points and St. Paul got within 7-4. The Lady ‘Dogs then went on a 10-2 run and followed up with an 8-2 scoring advantage to put away the second game 25-9.

Pool E (Friday)
St. Paul was grouped in pool E with Ganado, Tidehvaen and Smithville. St. Paul beat Ganado 25-11, 25-11 and swept Tidehaven 26-24, 25-21 before the Lady Tigers beat St. Paul 25-17, 15-25, 25-19.

Bronze Bracket (Saturday)
The Lady Cardinals lost to Palacios 25-20 and 25-19 in the Bronze semifinals. They defeated Louise 25-21, 21-25 and 25-14 in the consolation championship.
