Yoakum football: Bulldogs throttle Gonzales 34-14

By Alvin Gomez/Special to the Herald/Times
The Yoakum Bulldogs made a trip to Apache Stadium in Gonzales last week and the Dogs would come away with a win, 34-14, to improve to 4-1 on the season.
The Bulldogs' defense made big plays such as an 82-yard strip and score by Qyion Williams as well sacks by Trae Cuellar and Ty Gordon to snuff out Gonzales' drives. Cuellar would also have an interception and two touchdowns rushing to cap off his night. Yoakum will travel to Waco and face La Vega High on Friday night with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
The Apaches opened the game with possession at their 25 following a touchback. The Apaches' offense was quickly forced to punt after their drive stalled only gaining a single yard. The Yoakum offense would take over at the Apache 39 and need one play to score. Trae Cuellar taking a hand off, would dart through the defense and race into the end zone for the score. After a Sanchez extra point, Yoakum would take the lead 7-0 with 10:15 remaining in the first quarter. Following the kickoff, Gonzales would begin their drive at their own 22. The Apaches used a long 15-play drive that would take nearly eight minutes off the clock. The Apaches would finally hit paydirt with a 9-yard touchdown pass. The extra point added on would now tie the game at 7 with 2:14 remaining in the first quarter.
Yoakum's next possession would not be long as the Apaches' defense intercepted Bulldogs quarterback Zach Taylor.
The Apaches were hoping to capitalize on the turnover but after a Yoakum penalty put the ball on the Bulldogs' 23, Bulldogs' safety Williams stripped the running back and darted through the Apaches, making his way to the end zone untouched for an 82-yard touchdown. The Dogs' kicker Hernandez would tack on the extra point making the score 14-7 Yoakum at the end of the first quarter.
The Apaches, once again used a long methodical drive to keep the ball away from the Bulldogs' explosive offense, used 11 plays to make their way from their own 28 down to the Yoakum 10. The Apaches facing a fourth-down-and-goal situation opted to kick a field goal, but an errant snap led to a mishandled hold, which the Dogs' defenders surrounded and forced the Apaches to turn the ball over with 5:50 remaining in the second quarter.
Yoakum taking over now could only make it to the Gonzales' 40 before punting the ball back to the Apaches.
Once again though the defense would step up and it would be Bulldogs' defensive back Trae Cuellar intercepting the pass at the Gonzales' 20 and returning it down to the 13. The Dogs called on Williams and he delivered as usual with a 13-yard touchdown run. The extra point would be no good but the Dogs held a 20-7 lead with 1:41 remaining in the first half.
Yoakum would begin the second half at their 36 and be paced by the running of Cuellar who had runs of 34 yards and finally 20 yards to reach the end zone. The Dogs' Hernandez would tack on the extra point to give Yoakum a commanding 27-7 lead early on in the third quarter.
The Apaches first possession of the second half would end after four plays as Bulldogs' defender Drake Deel would recover a fumble on the Gonzales' 36 with 8:47 remaining in the third quarter.
The Yoakum offense would not be able to cash in on the turnover though and end up turning the ball over after a failed fourth-down play.
After a missed field goal attempt by Yoakum and a three and out by Gonzales, the Bulldogs' final scoring drive would begin at the Apache 40 early in the fourth quarter.
The Dogs' offense needed seven plays to make their way down to the Apaches' 6. On a fourth- and-goal situation, Taylor, after a spin move on an Apaches' defender, found Williams on the backside for a walk in 6-yard touchdown. The Sanchez extra point would bring the score to 34-7 Yoakum with 5:18 left in the game. The Apaches, taking over at their own 23, drove down the field and would hit the end zone on a 38-yard touchdown run. The successful extra point made it 34-14 with 1:10 remaining in the game.
