Yoakum volleyball: Lady 'Dogs sweep Tidehaven, Hallettsville in district play
In the couple of days leading up to Yoakum volleyball’s home district match with Hallettsville, head coach Kayla Natho overheard her players talk more about Homecoming than volleyball.
Naturally, she was concerned about the players staying focused on the match ahead of them.
The players showed they were still very attentive toward their play on the court as they stuffed Hallettsville 25-8. 25-9. 25-10 Friday afternoon.
“All I heard this week at practice was something about Homecoming or a dress, and I was concerned,” she said. “Today was tough because of that. I have five girls who are on the Homecoming Court and there were some distractions but I am proud the girls put Homecoming on hold and stay focused.”
After a 4-3 lead to start the match, the Lady ‘Dogs went on an 8-2 run with help from serves from Macie Blakeney and a Addison Pekar kill. The Lady Brahmas pulled back t 12-6 and Yoakum concluded the set with a 13-1 run with aces from Madison Gonzales, and Leah Muenich, and kills from Destiny Rios and Sam Adamek.
In the second game, Pekar and Jayana Phillips had early kills as Yoakum scored eight of the first 10 points
Plays from Phillips and Adamek put Yoakum ahead 17-8 and they simply needed an 8-1 run with ace by Olivia Fojt, and a kill from Adamek and Phillips.
Muenich opened the third game with an ace and the Lady ‘Dogs scored the first four points and 7-1 a little later put them ahead 13-3.
Hallettsville was able to score to score some points but still trailed 15-5.
Adamek, Rios and Phillips all contributed kills as Yoakum scored 10 of the next 15 points to end the set and the match.
For Yoakum, Pekar had six kills, one block; Rios had eight digs, seven kills; Phillips produced 10 kills, three digs, one assist, one ace, one block; Muenich finished with three aces, two digs; Macie Blakeney had 24 assists, eight digs, one kill; Gonzales tallied four digs, two aces; Fojt had two eight digs, two aces; Adamek had four kills, one block; Taylor Velek had two digs.
Yoakum 3, Tidehaven 0
Yoakum swept Tidehaven in quick fashion, 25-13, 25-15, 25-7 Sept. 12 in Yoakum to go to 2-0 after two district matches.
Pekar had three kills; Bri Lopez added four digs; Rios wrote in four kills, three digs, one block; Phillips chipped in 13 kills, six digs, one ace; Muenich had three digs; Blakeney tallied 28 assists, two kills, one block; Gonzales had three digs, one kill, one ace; Fojt contributed five digs, one ace; Adamek had nine kills, three digs, one block.
