Yoakum volleyball: Yoakum gets third in Silver Bracket at Schulenburg Tournament
The Yoakum volleyball team competed in the Schulenburg Tournament last Thursday through Saturday, going 4-4.
Thursday Pool play
Yoakum won two and lost one in Pool B on Thursday. The Lady ‘Dogs fell to East Bernard 25-20, 25-19; swept Gonzales 25-16, 25-11 and defeated Round Top-Carmine 25-22, 25-10 to come in second place.
Friday Pool play
Yoakum was placed into Pool H with Victoria St. Joseph, Weimar and Schulenburg. The Lady’ Dogs went 1-2, defeating St. Joseph
Yoakum 2, Victoria St. Joseph 0
Yoakum beat St. Joe 25-23, 25-23 to began Friday play.
The teams spit the first 22 points of the first set before Yoakum went on a 6-2 run on serves by McKenna New, a Samantha Adamek block, and kill from Addison Pekar and Jayana Phillips.
Yoakum was at set point, 24-21 before the Lady Flyers scored two straight and Phillips ended the set with a kill.
The Lady ‘Dogs scored seven of the first 10 points of the second game. Yoakum remained in the lead for the rest of the set although St. Joe did get within 17-16 and then 23-22 before a two-point surge gave Yoakum the win.
Schulenburg 2, Yoakum 0
Yoakum fell in its second match to the hosts 25-18, 25-21. The Lady ‘Dogs trailed early in the set but tied things up and then went ahead 7-6 on a Pekar kill. The Lady Shorthorns then went on a 9-4 run.
A Destiny Rios kill kept Yoakum within 20-16 before Schulenburg scored five of the next seven points to take the first game.
Yoakum found itself down for most of the second set until it forced a 19-19 tie and the Lady ‘Horns held a 6-2 scoring advantage from that point to win the set and the match.
Weimar 2, Yoakum 0
The Lady ‘Dogs closed out the day with a 25-23, 25-23 loss to 2A No. 7 Weimar.
Pekar, Phillips and Adamek all had kills to help put the Lady ‘Dogs ahead 10-8 after 18 points. Weimar took the lead briefly before Yoakum came back with plays by Phillips, Destiny Rios and an ace by Olivai Fojt for a 16-14 lead. Weimar then went on a 11-7 run to take the first game.
In the second game, late plays by Adamek helped Yoakum gain a 22-19 advantage and close to a win but Weimar had other ideas and outscored Yoakum 6-1 to win the match.
Silver Bracket
Yoakum was placed in the Silver bracket for Saturday’s play. They played in the bracket semifinals against Shiner, losing in two games 28-26 and 25-17. The Lady ‘Dogs rebounded to beat Industrial 25-18, 25-14 to finish third in Silver Bracket.
