With budget time right around the corner, Shiner city secretary Natalie Fric said Monday she wanted to review a few items so that they wouldn’t come as a surprise next month when city leaders dive into the numbers for real.
The first of those involved the city’s preliminary taxable value estimates.

Cleanup work continues at derailment site

Cleanup work continues at the site yesterday's train derailment in downtown Shiner, local officials say, as two of the closed crossing in the city have now been opened.

Lavaca County Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Egon Barthels, spent much of his initial response to Friday's derailment, manning the phones, first to establish a workable detour that didn't add too many unnecessary miles to anyone's travels, and later, to gather up the necessary forces needed for a clean-up of this magnitude.

As many as a dozen rail cars overturned in Shiner just before 7 p.m. Friday, shutting down all traffic on U.S 90A and spilling several tons of coal in the downtown area.

Shiner ISD board trustees recognized in Victoria

Members of the Shiner ISD Board of Trustees attended the Region 3 School Board Conference held last month in Victoria. Dr. Dan Stafford, local veterinarian and president of the SISD board, and Mr. Tim Kalich, board vice president, were honored for 15 years of service to Shiner ISD.

“We are so proud of her,” Principal Neely Yackel said. She won state with 5-foot-2-inches, then broke the state record at 5-foot-4-inches.
