By Murray Montgomery  -  Staff Writer Catastrophic flooding struck central Texas on Friday, July 4th, causing a surge of 20 to 26 feet on the Guadalupe River near Kerrville, resulting in drownings, people missing, and widespread damage.

HISD board holds special called meetings

The Hallettsville ISD Board of Trustees held two special called meetings recently with one held on Thursday, June 26 and the other on Monday, June 30.At the June 26 meeting the board approved the hiring of Kade Kahanek as a high school social studies teacher and coach.

New Texas laws effective July 1

Following the adjournment of the 89th Texas Legislature, a number of new laws will be going into affect this year.Effective July 1, the most notable new law involves the elimination of registering a purchased vehicle with a temporary paper license plate.

Council Approves Grant Contracts

The Moulton City Council approved a couple of contracts at the June 10 meeting.This is a contract for Urban Engineering and USCA Municipal Advisors,” City Administrator LuAnn Rogers said. “It is connected to the Texas Water Development Board grant applications that we submitted.

DeWitt County officials attend County Investment Conference

DeWitt County Judge Daryl Fowler and County Treasurer Desi Poth-Garibay recently joined more than 200 county officials from across Texas at the 2025 Conference of the County Investment Academy, held June 16-18 in Corpus Christi.

June is one of the wettest months of the year and the much-needed rainfall totaling 6.09 inches was much appreciated.Rain fell on nine days with the heaviest of 2.36 inches coming on the 12th as multiple showers passed over the county. The amount was the most since 1.97 inches on January 9th.

Law enforcement agencies conduct Yoakum drug arrest

Early Wednesday morning, June 25, the Yoakum Police Department along with assistance from the Austin County Sheriff ’s Office, Lavaca County Sheriff’s Office, and the Cuero Police Department, executed a search warrant and arrest at a residence within the city limits of Yoakum.

Between a rule and a hard place

Hallettsville council members recently heard from city administrator Grace Ward about some violations to city zoning ordinances that she recently uncovered while conducting those inspections herself for the first time, violations that had long existed if those city codes were to be enforced.

Man sentenced for using stolen credit cards

Following the conclusion of a trial held in the Honorable District Judge William D. Old III court on June 25, Charles Edward Logan was convicted of using stolen credit cards to steal tires from area companies.
